Tranny pan has a drain bolt. On my daughter's '06 I do a drain and fill every couple of motor oil changes. Never have dropped the pan to do the filter, so I can't give you any info on that. Maxlife is good stuff, and the 2 quart swaps have kept the fluid looking good.

Yes, change it. Old oil does nothing but wear things out faster. New oil is not going to hurt anything that hasn't already been hurt.

Josh, I would definitely change the fluid out. GM advised a very poor maintenance schedule for these cars, I imagine to please some eco fascists at the EPA. If you don't feel confident on changing it yourself most shops can do a complete flush for about $250 bucks, which is a bit steep. I flush the transmissions in all of my cars as the process is fairly simple and takes about 15 minutes to do the entire fluid capacity.

Here is a post covering DIY flush process.

As others have suggested, doing a fluid change (sump only) with each oil change will be a big help, the goal is to eventually get ALL of the burnt fluid out for smoother shifting and less slip. Both of my Aveo's would 'surge' while idling in gear, the fluid was BLACK in both cars. Since flushing them they run like new.
