No fifth gear
I bought a 2005 Aveo sport. It seems the shift pattern is offset to the right. When I try and select 5th gear, the shifter won't go over far enough. Reverse is where first gear should be. You don't have to pull up the reverse lock out to get in revers. Also when you are slowing( coasting) down, there is a whirring noise. If you put in the clutch it goes away, Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Stephen

the linkage is adjustable on the engine side of the firewall, I suggest, putting it in 3rd gear, then loosening the adjustment lock and positioning (more center) the shifter, and then tightening the lock. This would require 2 people to hold the shift in positin while tightening it.

This just happened to my car last night. It was driving fine, then all of the sudden everything seemed to shift to the right and can't get it to go into 5th. I have an 09 Aveo5 LS. My husband isn]t mechanically inclined, so I don't know what to do.

there are two possibilities. one is the adjustment point where the rod comes out of the firewall. like i stated about, the second is the pivot of the boomer rang shaped linkage arm if it is loose you will loose your ability to find gears. I replaced mine with a bolt and nut.
refer to this:

the second picture goes into the top at picture 1, if that is broken the you need a bolt and nut big enough to replace that. (washers too)
third and forth explain the adjustment at the firewall.
basically jack up the car safely. you sit in the car and move the shifter, have your husband look the moving parts, back near firewall behind engine, about steering rack. se what is loose, and fix.
