      Overfilled engine oil

      Hi, newbie here.

I got involved with a friends Aveo. He was low on oil so he went and bought one of those 5 quart jugs and poured the entire thing in the engine. I asked him what the dip stick showed before he did this and he said it was on the low mark. Long story short he drove it for about a 1/4 mile before he heard a pop then it started billowing smoke. Thats when he called me. We drained the oil to a normal level then started the car. Of course it billowed smoke and gradually calmed down but it has not stopped even after driving it many miles. There is something definately wrong. It still runs good but you can feel that there is a miss now and then. I am wondering what the pop was and what could have happened to the engine? Could it have popped the PCV? Blown a head gasket? its not dripping oil so I dont think either of the main seals blew.

      Thoughts?

with an extra 4 quarts of oil the crank case was fully submerged, the oil would be popping the pistons, blowing past the rings. etc.

hard to say what the pop noise was, but you most likely need to replace the plugs, as i can say 100% you were burning oil in the cylinders (just the white smoke tells me that).

After overfilling an engine to about 9 quarts of oil in a system that requires 5, what might you expect?

At the very least I'd suggest pulling the spark plugs and cleaning them.

Some people shouldn't attempt doing any car maintenance. If you don't know WTF you are doing, just leave the poor car alone and let it die of neglect.
