      .5 psi or .5 bar?

i dont think any factory turbo is only good to only .5 psi.. they typically push 15-20 tops..

Yeah, that didn't sound right... I had a feeling I misread those numbers... I see the mention of 180 lbs torque on the transmission, 200 hp on engine internals in this thread... but somewhere it seems someone said the car could handle up to 5 psi (not .5) without doing extra engine work. When talking about cams, you compared adding performance cams to kind of like turning up the boost, rabbit... (by allowing more air in, with or without boost) Would it be practical to put on turbo that was around 5 psi of boost (put it on, set it up, standalone ecu, reinforced engine mounts & all), and later get overbore pistons and upgrade the cam? And then re-tune... Or would that be TOO much of a difference to reasonably accomodate? (In respect to what you said about the building to 150hp is a lot different than building to 200hp) I have all these questions hoping to plan things out well; do things in the right order, and match things up all proper like...

Alright, so I found a turbo kit that has a 35mm wastegate and is 8 psi ... also, has a boost controller. From what I've read, the boost controller regulates the wastegate, and that can raise/lower the boost. (? izzat right ?) I have a message to the seller, but haven't got an answer yet... If it has a 35mm wastegate and is listed as 8 psi, is that the maximum boost it can produce? And if so, couldn't it be set with the boost controller to just not exceed 5 psi? If so, I got the kit picked out (that won't require engine work), a shop that I'm 75% sure can do the manifold (MAY have to look further...) Getting there.

8 psi means the spring inside the wastegate opens at 8 psi, so the minimum amount of boost you can run is 8 psi, which is a little high to start off, you can buy seperate springs that will be lower and play with the boost controller then after you have it the way you want, you install the spring thats closest to your target boost.

      Wastegate spring > boost controller

If only i had the motivation to part my kit out i could sell you some pieces, i decided to part the car out afterall.

Ok... so if I'm going to take it to a race shop to get the turbo installed, they can probably get the specs on what springs will lower it to say... 4 psi, right? That way I could play with 4-5 psi on the boost controller, and then switch out the springs again if I do engine work that would allow for more boost. Thanks, man! And uh... whaddya mean by "Part the car out"? Almost sounds like "junking it" and seeling the parts, but that doesn't seem right. Did something happen?

The engine blew in mine due to an oil return line failure.

Im tired of dumping money into this car and it always breaks, so im parting the good parts out to make a little money and sending the rest to the scrap.

Im gonna buy a car thats easier to work on. Have my eyes on a 2010+ GTI

Dang! Sorry to hear that... How much boost were you running at the time? I'd be interested in maybe taking some of the working parts off your hands, in return for cash. If and when you get around to it... maybe help with the down payment on something newer! I actually have a 3 year warranty that'll cover about anything, even if it's a result of mods, from the dealership I bought this and the last car... that's kinda why I want to get turbo set up before it expires... just in case there's any kinks! (Won't cover aftermarket parts, but engine, transmission, anything else...)

Was up to 8psi, i even had ordered a boost controller to raise it to 12.

At 8psi the car was pretty much on par with a stock Mazdaspeed 3 and it ripped the doors off my friend's 2009 WRX with 265 hp.

That's awesome! It's gonna be a bummer if you're not around this forum... Since it's kind of a new passion of mine, I don't know a lot of ppl that are into car mods... If you're on facebook, feel free to send me a friend invite! I'd be interested in your future car projects! Though I'm really not on there a lot... mainly for business. Welcome to Facebook - Log In, Sign Up or Learn More And please lemme know somewhere if you have any parts I might could use...
