Do you have the first or second gen engine? (E-TEC or ECOTEC)? With the second gen, as per rabbit, it may not be a good idea to run a filter that needs to be oiled (I don't know if this one does or not, like K&N one does) because it can mess with the MAF sensor if the oil gets on it. I'm using one like this on my first gen motor with no problems whatsoever. No engine light. The only thing I suggest is get a CAI piping to have some noticeable gains... Just having a filter that passes more air but that's drawn from the hot engine bay won't give you much gains at all. Even as restrictive as the stock piping is, it draws it's air from the fender area... Keeping the CAI filter in that area (cold air with less restrictions) is the best route to go.
