Short Ram to Cold Air
I have a short Ram intake in the aveo just because when looking for a space to put the tubing for a full blown cold air intake I found that it wasn't going to be easy. I still want to put in a full blown cold air intake to go in the corner of the bumber and possibly pop the plastic piece off and put a vent/scoop in it. I wanted to see if anyone has put in a cold air intake vs. the short ram and if they could post some good pics of it so I can see what you did.

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
look on ebay, both versions are available. basically you use the short ram. but instead of putting the filter on you put another pipe on that takes the filter into the wheel well..
then if you wanted to keep going you would need another silicone piece and another angle pipe and bracket, to bring it around front..
then put the filter on.

I've done both:

PS: I'm willing to sell my CAI minus the filter

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Did you have to make the stock intake hole in the fender larger? And on the inside of the wheel well the cabin intake is also there I believe connected to the air chamber what did you do with that? Just drill a hole in your pipe? Maybe I'm wrong about the cabin intake but I thought I saw it there... Oh and what size pipe is that?
-
Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Did not have to drill out the hole into the wheel well. I just took out the air box and resonator, no big deal. No idea about the cabin intake, I didnt see anything like that connected. Size piping...I'm not sure really anymore, I've had it for a while

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Ok thanks, I'll be looking into this more. I'm definately going to put it in the wheel well, this made it a lot easier. :D

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Seeing as how were talking about intakes I had a thought. What if you move the IAT sensor further down the intake on a CAI, thus it will read coole air and add more fuel which would help enhance your effectiveness of the CAI??? just a thought.

Interesting theory, but I believe if you have a proper CAI and not a cheaply made one, it would not make much of a difference. I believe material and wall thickness play a big factor. The one I have stays at a pretty decent temp, but when I tried the cheap plastic Spectre that anyone can get from NAPA, AZ, or AA, that thing heated up fast!

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Hats off to that, thinking about insulating the pipe after I do the piping into the wheel well. That will keep it pretty cold.

So much truth but im thinking like this: If you have an AEM intake and you drill a hole about 2 inches from the end of it by the filter, it would be away from alot of engine bay heat soak and read way cooler temps then say it being next to the motor right?
-
Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
I would say so, you don't have any engine heat near it...

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Where did you get the IAT sensor from ? the one on my 09 appears to be welded into the intake pipe and would have to be cut out and fettled into a CAI , not difficult but I'd probably get a better result if I can find a replacement stand alone sensor.

I know on my 05 it just snugs into a grommet on the intake trac

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Mine was glued in with some pretty heavy stuff, took me a little while to remove it and not damage it or the stock pipe incase I need to get warranty work done.

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
its 3" pipe that will fit in that hole

im not sure if this is already covered, but im lost on how you say it wont be easy. on my 05 the hole was already there for the stock airbox, so i just ran piping into the wheel well and i was done. its best to do a CAI honestly, as i found my ram air rubbed through my coolant line from all the vibes the engine put out. just remove the stock airbox's (is one the resonator?) and run your tubing into the wheel well. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE PLASTIC GUARDS ON YOUR BELTS. you dont want your CAI bouncing into the pulleys if you use a DIY CAI from the autozone like i did.

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
i still just wish they had a bolt on cai for the newer 09 engine...

I know what I am doing, those guards will never come off my aveo. I also hit a nice stump today and while my bumper was popped off I decided to take out the air chamber in the wheel well, since I had to get in there to fix it anyway. Long story short good as new, the local hardware store had the stuff I needed.

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Well I finally did it, I went to lowes got some 2in. pvc pipe and made the cold air intake. I know what you're going to say...pvc pipe? ricer? well I figured why spend $50 on piping when it is available for $9? I am insulating the engine parts so people will never notice what kind of piping it actually is. Actually I got a few comments from friends and they said, "it actually looks pretty good from the sound of it I thought it would look redneck"
I'll post a pic later today if I can.
Oh one more thing I'm a little bit disappointed not having the extreme "growl" like I use to from my short ram, it's almost as quiet as stock now, but it still has that kick in the higher rpm range and it isn't sucking in engine heat so I'm not complaining.

I wont call you a ricer for that, it works. Thats how most aftermarke parts started any, with "Home Depot" mods then they were improved upon and polished up to what we see today.

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Thanks, as soon as I insulate it no one will know anyway. I plan on putting some cash away to get a turbo after my warranty runs out so when that happens no more pvc pipe lol

Yeah I dont think PVC pipe would be good to use near a turbo....
-
Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
3 in. PVC pipe is not only 3 in. big, it has a bigger diameter because of the plastic on the outside. It's 3in. inside not outside. I could have fitted a 2.5 in. but I didn't have a rubber/ silicon connector to go to the manifold. There wasn't any 2.5 in. to 2 in adapters either.

Yeah that's what I mean, it's all coming out when the turbo comes in lol. Using the piping that comes in the kit.

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
This shows that I could not possibly fit a 3 in piece of pvc pipe in the hole. I can just fit a finger in with the 2 in pipe there.

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Here's my oil breather I put in a little while back too.

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Haha, that air intake is ghetto but it also looks kinda cool. At least it works, thats what I dont understand about car manufactures making parts that are restrictive and expensive when we go to home depot and build a better performing system for 10 bucks lol.
-
Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
LOL yeah I here you! It is a little ghetto but it gets the job done.
-
Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
oem staff don't ratle or make too much noice

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Nothing rattles if that's what you are asking

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Well I insulated the pipe inside the engine compartment today. I used R-13 wall insulation then wrapped it in tape to make it conform to the pipe, then wrapped it in aluminum foil. It looks like regular pipe insulation lol, I didn't do too bad. I had a second opinion and they asked me where I bought the pipe insulation
I'll try to get a picture posted on here soon.

Actually, the piping probably isn't as restrictive as you might think. Plus the way the intake is made, you'll never have to fix it, because it'll never break.
If you take for example the PVC intake, it probably doesn't meet 90% of the OEM specifications. Some of which might be:
-Reliable
-Easy to maintain
-Excellent filtration
-Map and IAT calibrated
-Quiet
-Performance.
The only criteria the PVC intake will meet is probably performance.
-
Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
If I wanted it to the PVC intake could last a pretty long time, nothing can go wrong. It's on there and sealed perfectly.
As for easy to maintain, all I have to do is remove the filter and blow it out with an air compressor, there's nothing left to do.
And of course it doesn't meet OEM specifications, aveos don't come stock with pvc air intakes

Plus PVC wouldn't last too long in Canadian Cold winters. But all joking aside, I'm sure the PVC provides better air flow.

Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
And is PVC rated up to 200+ degrees?
Keep an eye on it. At least it would be cheap to replace if it starts cracking.
-
Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
Jeeze if it gets up to 200+ degrees in my engine compartment in that area I would be a little worried. Come to think of it... isn't some of the intake manifold plastic??? What about the engine cover? The oil cap? I think there are some plastic tanks in there too for windshield washer fluid, and brake fluid. The battery would be pretty much toast too. I have to keep an eye on a lot of stuff then.
-
Re: Short Ram to Cold Air
different plastic withstand different temp... the space shuttle has a lot of plastic, it hits 10k? on the reentry?
PVC though i would think could withstand 200 easily, is it not used for water piping (not the 3" pipe but smaller)
a hot water tank can be set to 250.. at least i can adjust mine that high. would be a shame to turn my hot water tank so high the pipes would melt..
i would imagine for short periods of time the engine compartment can get that hot.. like when parked in the desert.
