So whats up with the battery fuse?

So whats the deal with the fuse under the red terminal cover? What's it needed for? I swear take off the terminal cover someone and tell me why it isn't a simple hookup straight to the battery post!

Well i was wondering what do you need to get this fuse out on my 2011. I have tried a few tools and it just stays put. What tool works Thanks Richard
