I'm also guessing we could swap differentials between the D16 and D20? Anything else missing?

The 2010 transmission with the D20 final drive would be the ultimate for getting better mileage.

Quite true. You'd drop roughly 300 rpm @ 65 mph.

But, does anyone know if you can actually do this or not?

Iirc you cannot swap final drives between transmissions but you may be able to swap gears. So you can't put the d20 final drive in a d16 but you could potentially put a d16 5th gear in a d20.

There are more transmissions from opel that will fit with some work, includes the f28 (think withot looking ) 6 speed which has close ratio and taller cruise gears.
