Torque converter trouble!! Please help asap.

Im doing a transmission swap in a 04 aveo 1.6l with an automatic trans. I pulled the bad trans and picked up a good used one from a trusted source. I thought i had it seated in the bell housing but i was wrong!! While bolting the new one up i cracked the bell housing from the pressure. Well i swapped bell housings with the old trans and all is well, but before i put it back in i need to know if theres a trick to seating the torque converter? I cant let this happen again!! The two taps on the converter dont seam to wanna line up to the ones inside the trans. It actually looks like the ones inside the trans maybe alittle offset? Idk but I've been out here way to long wrenching on this thing!! Thanks for any and all input!!
