Trouble code P0014 -- Solved. (Camshaft solenoid)

Here's a mysterious situation: 2009 with 40K, always garaged, no mechanical engine work ever done on it except routine maintenance. Two days ago my wife told me she heard an odd sound coming from the engine right after the car was started. I heard it for myself yesterday. Upon starting it was an odd noise that sounded like a foreign object might have been stuck onto a belt. After 15-20 seconds the noise disappeared. The car ran and drove fine with no symptoms, but the check engine light came on and stayed on. Today I started the car and there was no noise at all - and the check engine light was OFF. Everything seems normal. The stored code was P0014.

Now.weeks later, it is setting the same code daily. I shut the check engine light off by clearing the code with the scan gauge. There are no adverse symptoms, whatsoever. If anything the fuel economy seems slightly better.

Update: Now after several weeks of it setting code daily, with it being my wife's daily driver, I decided to remove the engine component that might be causing it. Guess what? I drove it 20 miles today, and it stopped doing it (setting code). As long as it doesn't affect the performance of the car, it can wait.

I am curious as to what you removed. I am having the same stupid code and can't seem to get it to go away.

      Refer to this thread:

Apparently this is a camshaft solenoid that contains internal filters. It is easy to access. I tried to remove it, but it wouldn't budge. Rather than risk damaging it, I left it alone.

It still sets a code sporadically, but performance is not affected. I told my wife, "as long as it still runs with no problem, to hell with it".

Here's the outcome on this. In May the car failed state inspection due to this code. I had my mechanic replace both solenoids involved. That cured the problem, and it wasn't cheap. He had the same difficulty I mentioned in removing them. The clacking noise I heard initially was apparently that of the solenoid failing.
