Thanks I got my hands on one and wrestled the old one out, problem fixed.
I'll leave this bit of info here, I took my old relay apart and much to my surprise it "IS" an electronic flasher. Being dumbfounded why it would go faster with LEDs I looked up the datasheet on the chip and found this
So it would seem the flasher was designed to act like the ol' flashers of yesteryear when a lamp failed. Could probably trick the chip pulling up the "Lamp failure detection" PIN to trick it for LEDs but it depends if $12 dollars is precious to you to even go through the effort."Lamp outage is indicated by frequency doubling during hazard warning as well as
