you guys should try the DIY on here about making custom lights, you can pick up a set of earlier red tails cheap, and then do all that stuff. might cost you $75.
as far as painting the inside black to "look" like night shades, it wouldn't happen. most of the color is in your lens. and you cant paint the reflective area.. or you will look alot of light. i personally wouldn't do night shades, its hard to work with, and tends to look flat, but i have real paint here.
i got stock oem taillights that i can sell if you guys mess up

without major modding they wont fit, curviture is way off.
well i was thinking of using the tail light portion that it on the trunk of the civic sedan, the shape kinda looks with a little cutting it could fit in the lower portion of the tail light.

yeh nightshades is hard to do right, im just imagining a nice untampered red lens with a dark "background inside for during the day. the one section i wouldnt touch is the reverse tho... niteshades inside the lens may work more nicely to tho...

Why not just replace the stock bulbs with LED's? Or you looking to change the actual design.
As for painting them black, check out the tail light options on ebay. Like the headlights, you can paint the non reflective part black and not lose much light.
I should have mentioned im trying to come from a sedan owners point of view. I just think it would be neat to see soe custom sedan tails.
btw, ive tried led bulbs and they are crap, expensive and i went thru 7 bulbs before i quit and just stuck with reg bulbs.
These ones are folded until you lock them into your lense, then they open up. They're like 21 bucks here in my town.
