Headlights not working - kinda...

Searched through the forum and haven't found a problem quite like this unless I missed it somehow. I'll explain the best I can...

I have a Chevy 2008 Aveo. When the lights are in the "off" position, the driver's side headlight is on but the passenger side is not working. Now turn the switch one click and all stays the same. Turn one more click to "auto" and the driver's side light goes out but the passenger side light comes on. Turn high beams on and both lights finally work together. The headlights had both been replaced recently when this started happening. Bought another pair just to make sure... same thing happening. Connections at the headlight "plug" were checked to make sure clean and secure.

As strange as its sound, could it be a bad switch not making proper connections? I'd love any feedback. Thanks!

Not a direct answer, however I have seen a similar problem with stop and tail lights in old GM vehicles. The problem was the lamp socket and tail light body had a poor earth connection due to corrosion of the tail light body. Check all the new headlights for corrosion and earth continuity and the high and low beam plugs/sockets for the correct supply voltages at the various switch positions.
