I don't think there is another way to open them, the screws may be to hold the tail light in place.
The oven method is pretty safe, and remember they are sealed with glue or silicon, there is no easy way other than bake them

any advice on time and temp? Would a heat gun work as well? And are the lenses fragile as the rx8?
Let me try to get the time and temp, and yes, a heat gun could do the job in my opinion.

Ok, you need to preheat the oven at 220 degrees for a few minutes, then bake them between 6-8 minutes to be able to separate the lens.

If i recall correctly I changed my brake light thru the inside- not removing the outer lens at all. Its been 2-3 years but take off the trunk lining and a screw driver should do the job.
