Thats what I'm going back to school to learn to do now that I already have my tech degree. And I make sure everytime I'm in the shop I have a dust mask on, and fresh air supply when in the prep deck or spray booth. My teacher says his old coworkers laughed at him for always wearing masks and fresh air supplys, but he has the final laugh bc hes the only example of an old body guy who still works

3m dust masks are effecient for sanding dust. If you breathing through your nose not much will get into your lungs for how much exposed you have. But you are still taking in unhealthy levels, your sinuses will be all "colorful". Not really since your doing one car. Haha

      Always best to take precautions.

thing is my orbital sander makes minc meat of fibreglass and filler and paint off the car.. so you are literally in a cloud of dust... and its all confined within the garage.. because its only a small double garage anyway.. so not much room for the air and everything to circulate... so takes a good 10 mins or so for it to clear up...
and i do start choking.. so yee i think it is time.. loll

thing is i use 2 wear those lil disposable ones. but it gets so hot and stuffy with them on and there annoying..
does anyone have any exp with the respirators.. and any good models that you could advise... plus are the filters washable for re-use.. ??

A respirator gas a charcoal canister. One the bag is open it's good for about 8 hours of exposure. And cost $40 or so per mask. The ones with replaceable cartridges are more. But the cartridges are less.

The masks get hot and stuffy once they are clogged. Generally. In your environment might I suggest rigging up a catch fan? Basically take a box fan and point it into a filter box. To catch all the particles. Would cost like $40 if you buy a new fan. But also gets air moving etc.

I can't explain it well on my iPhone.

      Re: OMG WHAT A COLOUR!!!

I was actually thinking of something along those lines... but with my garage as i have a large double garage door at the front. i was thinking to have like maybe 2 or maybe 3 large fans sitting near the back of the garage and then as im working just have them blowing out towards that door so it just pushes all the dust out..

another thing is my sander actually has a little pocket type thing which clips on to the end of the sander to collect all the dust and stuff.. i never really use it LOL maybe i should...
but was thinking to buy a cheap hoover and just fabricate some sort of part so it clips on to that part.. and just sucks up all the dust before it even gets a chance to fly out...
would save me hours of cleaning as well...

You could modify the baggy looking attachment to hook up through a hose since you never use it anyways.

you know, have you though about a switch to water da sanding. if your not sanding putty work i would highly recommend it. it keeps the shop air very clean, and the water keeps the paper clean so your scratches fill easier..

I'm not sure how common it has become. I know we were a test shop 5 years ago in the paint department. (like i said cant use it on filler work)
