Does anyone know what kind of paint to use? I was going to use krylon fusion plastic paint, but it will probably get messed up in the oven. so i was thinking engine paint cause it says you can use it on valve covers... but im not sure if they mean the metal ones on like a 350.
so what kind of paint do i use?
i tried searching but didnt have any luck.
I would hvlp spray them at a bodyshop and then reinstall the lenses. would look killer and will last. Good luck bro!
For the most part, the inside of headlights don't get too hot unless you upgrade your bulbs to something incorrect (HID simulators, supe high output 100W+, etc.). My Friend Josh at Izn Trbl says he usually uses regular Plastic Fusion paint when he does it for his customers. Use a plastic bonding paint and you will skip the problem of peeling.
any idea how much it would cost to go to a shop to have them paint it?
I know the headlight itself doesnt get hot, but it will get hot when i take the lenses off because i have to put them in the oven at like 150 or 200 degrees. so im gonna need a high temp paint that will bond to plastic.
should the engine enamel plaint work?

i used engine enamel in my cobalts headlights, and i never had a chipping problem, i used 3 coats of the paint with no problems

i think maybe hes saying he will put it in the oven after so the glue will get gooey again so it is easier to seal the headlight.
He has to put them in the oven so that the silicon sealant will be soft enough to seperate the lense from the backing.
how about a write up? oven temps, etc.
i think it was 350 degrees for like 10 minutes, but dont quote me on that, im not exactly sure and I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU TRY IT, lol. i did it on my cobalt but taht was a year ago, another method is if you stick a hair dryer in the hole where the bulb goes and keep it there for a while untill you can remove the clear plastic.
actually, im going to do it maybe this friday or saturday, i want mines black after seeing them on aveohotrod's car,
i thought it was put them in the oven at 200-250 for like 7 or 8 minutes take them out pull the lenses, put them back in for 7-8 minutes to fully remove them. clean them good. paint them with a high heat engine paint. then put them back in the oven to heat the glue back up then stick them back on. then if moisture is getting in the headlight, put them back in the oven for a bit and press the lens on tightly again.
very brief how to, but thats basically how i believe you do it.

WHAT TO DO...
1. remove all screws, harnesses, and anything else that is removable off headlight.
2. put in oven for 10-12 minutes on 170 degrees
3. remove headlights out of oven*caution headlights will be hot but you should be alright cuz YOU ARE A MAN RIGHT??? ARE YOU??? then begin prying the lens from the headlight casing, but be gentle.
4. clean surface of area you are gonna paint with alcohol or some other cleaning agent. Then wipe dry
5. spray coats of paint and allow to dry
6. put headlight housing, and lens back in oven for about 10 minutes at 170 degrees
7. remove headlights from oven, and apply glue to grooves and smash the lens and housing back together making sure the seal is tight so no water will enter.
TESTING RE-SEAL
1. fill bath tub with water
2. submerge headlight for that only the seals are submerged, leave for it there for just a couple of seconds
3. if you have leaks you will notice since there would be water in the housing and you will and have apply more glue.
This should cover it, feel free to ask anymore questions if need be.
I just did this and it was a lot of fun..will post pics tonight.

is this possible on the rear lights too? or is it better to do that on the outside??
it took a couple hours. I'm sure its possible on the rear..
nice, i have been thinking of doing that to our 07 sedan, what paint did you use? flat,gloss, or semi gloss? it looks kinda flat in the pics. great work gyrl :D
I used flat :) It didnt need gloss to be honest with you. High temp engine paint - flat black
how does it look a night? you got to get some shots of it with the light on at night :D
there gonna look pretty much like a regular light when its on.
im gonna try to do this tonight and/or tomorrow and also put in city lights :D it should be awesome.
city light would look great with black housing, im jelous
that looks badass......now im definetly gonna do it tomorrow, can you get all the materials like the putty knife and whatnot at like autozone or kragen?

yeah but you have a sedan not a hatch the lights are different
Hi Aveogyrl,
This is great...just what I needed. Quick question, how does the sealant affect the abillity to reopen the headlight if need be? A few people have said it makes it much more difficult the second time around. Are there alternatives to the plastic sealant? Also, and I apologize in advance if this is a silly question, where's the best place to purchase it? First time doing this particular mod so your tips are appreciated!!
