Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
hey guys n girls..
i been away for a while from here... been a bit busyyy..
hers some pics of what ive done lately... choped my roof off :(
and then almost finished adding my polycarbonate roof on should have it atleast bolted in place by sunday if not by next week depending on my schedule...
its going to be see through i know it does seem it. its because the protective plastic film is still on it. once thats removed i will tint it with limo black tint film, and then it should look AMAZING :P well thats the plan.. :\ fingers crosssed..
leme knw wht u fink.. :D
ive been told im an idiot already so dnt b shy LOLLL.. and any ideas are more than welcom..
im thinking to spray my litl vortex generators (lil spikes at the back) in white and the spoiler in carbon fiber bonet carbon fiber and rest of car in white... and my side skirts and rear wide arches all in carbon fiber as well... and some NIICEEE 18" or 19" CHROME RIMS to finish it off :D
before u say they wont fit... they will on mine.. becuase ive cut away at the original fender and car body to allow extra room for the wheel space... maybe even thinking of having wideer 19's on the back and normal 18 or 17's on the front.. as my wide arch at the back is so wide n chunky...
well we shal see in due time.. il cross that bride when i get there as they say lol..
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
I think that's a neat idea. I like form and function and having been contemplating foing a ragtop sunroof on my Z34 once I have it off the road for a resto.
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
nice one... hope it goess well... all im saying is if your planning on cutting with an angle grinder.. make sure you have PLENTY OF DISCS.. i went through at least 4-5 discs LOL!!
i got anoyed in the end and just used a jigsaw with a metal blade got a bit tricky when it came to the beams going across as there was ALLLOOTTT of vibrating and shaking as the metal as in layers..
but worth it .. DEFOO..
i litrly just sat in my car for like 1 hour just looking up thinking i cant wait til im on the road and at night time... youl b abl 2 see the stars through your roof... and during the day i still need to find a solution for VERY SUNNY days were ima probably get blinded by the sun...
thinking of possibly puttin in a blind/curtain sort of thing.. like you get those car blinds... but have one thats retractable.. so i just pull it along and then tug and it rolls away by itself... not alot of space used and does the job...

They have glass that goes from clear to solid at the push of a button....
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
ye but it costs BUXXXX!!! i looked in to that was abit risky as well for me because its like a sheet that goes over the glass. and i wasnt sure if it would be flexible or not and i needed it to be so i could have the curvs of the roof and also id be drilling in to do..
and from what i read about it when i was doing research i think it has some sort of current running through it. theres a few different types but the one that caught my attention was "Polymer dispersed liquid crystal glass"
basically you have a switch and it goes from like you said transparent to opaque at the flick of a switch.
however i dont know if id get away with it because im bolting my sheet in, then sealing it around the edges from inside and outside. and im guessing that would have some sort of impact on the functionality of it as it would probably "break the circuit" as there would be holes all around the edges.
ahh well. good old polycarbonate will do me for now... :D going to have a clear coat of scratch resistant laqure on the outside as well once i finish installing it all. so if i go under any low tress i dont get no scratches from twigs and branches. or if i leave my bag on the roof and drag it off and the zip or something scratches it
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
 HolySh%$ M33vil, ur one crazy dude but u got some cojones for sure. u should try 2 get some sponsers. anyways a retractable roof will be pretty sweet. if not cut the hatch off and make a aveo/el camino truck. 8) hope u get that all sorted out man. its gonna be an epic build for sure
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
lol is the seat sitting in there? or did you put in the rails and such?
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
Thats super cool. Back in the 70's buick made a skyhawk (chevy monza style car) with an all glass roof..
They called it the Astroroof option. Only a few thousand were made and just a handfull exist today.
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
Awesome Idea. Did you do anything for strengthing? Will suspension mods be enough to reduce flex to keep this from twisting your seal loose and causing leaks?

well ive been bolting it down today every few cm's and ive run out of bolts LOL..
and after that im going to give at seal like they use in bathrooms for showers and so on. then a coat of fiberglass on top with a touch of filler for shaping it up.. and then black rubber mastic to be double sure no water leaks in, and because its flexible i should get away with it... (fingers crossed) lool!
in regards to strengthening im going to have 1 5cm wide steel support going acroos covered in carbon fiber to semi blend in with the black tint that will go on in a few days time or by next week anyway.
and also im planning on geting a front upper and lower strut and also rear upper and lower strut when i get around to it.. but that would probably be last thing on my list before i start engine work as im not about to start racing my car around.. YET... lol :P

i dont have a clue how to even get sponserd and to be honest i dont think anyone would :( lolll
and plus as much as i would love to be sponsored i dont want someone telling me what to do with my car and having 101 stickers all over the place... not a big fan of decals...
btw the roof wont be retractable.. i ment il have a blind being used as a type of shade when its summer to block out the sun to be used... which will be retractable not the polycarbonate sheet itself..

ye my seats are bolted in. i fabricated the original sub frames with gliders and used a universal racing seat bracket to connect the seats to the subframe :D
a bit of drilling and sum cutting with an angle grinder done the job... just remember if you are gona do it... smooth out the metals edges were you cut it or bend it over so you dont cut yourself every time you try and recline your seat or put your seat belt in ... :)
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
UPPDAATTEDD PICCSSS :D
WAHOOOOO
i got the bolts i needed today.. ran out of bolts the other day still need to do the entire left side tho.. couldnt wait n started striping away at the protective stickers  LOLL

Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
That looks really cool! Cant wait to see it when its finished!
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
not how i would have done it but hey i respect that your doing it.
how are you going to cover the bolt holes? are you just going to cover them or putty onto the window?

im actually planning on leaving the bolts in to reduce the chance of it coming out of place because i get a bit carried away with the hand brake and i know thats going to increase the chance of it cracking the putty or what ever else is applied..
to cover them im just going to mask up the middle area and cover it with something so nothing gets on it. and around the edges say about a few mm make a fiberglass border and then a touch of filler to allow me to shape it easily and then some rubber mastic around the edge to stop any water trying to get in...
HOWEVER im not realllly 100% on this idea...
if you have any ideas please share.. i kinda just went with the flow on this one LOLL well i kinda do with everything i do..
btw to everyone i just made a clip on youtube of my car but the lambo hinges are off as the cars still in the garage and its a night mare as my roof isnt the tallest of roofs lol.. :(
heres the link..
i got the roof, screen in the steering wheel, engine start button in the gear knob and the wide arch i took from the corsa kit (prowler wide arch kit), along side few bits here and there with my sub :D

=D> props my good friend~
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
Looks like a fun project. Did you use any silicone or insulators around the bolts through the polycarbonate? I am picturing fractures around bolts with frame flex. Also are those bolts corrosion resistant? Just some thoughts.

well your already into your idea, so its too late for mine.. so i wont post it. i had 2 ways to try. but would have gone with one.. i am probably going with a ragtop at some point, but might graft in only of the newer glass roofs out of another car. that would be more functional (open close) than just a sheet of glass.
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
Didn't read the whole thread, but just a thought on being blinded during the day:
Mini coopers have an auto retracting fabric mesh that you can clip into place when you have the sunroof open... might help you out.

the roof hasnt been completly fixed in yet. now based on what youve said im planning on putting a bit of silicone in the holes and then puting the bolts in with white piping tape around the bolts so its abit more snug. never really thought of that to be hones :\ i thought i have like a million bolts so should be fine...! lol shows how much i know ay! lol :(
then after that a fiberglass and filler layer over the screws/bolts so there tucked away.
might even have it covered with carbon fiber after the filler to give it some jazz! lol
There is foam all the way around the edges of the roof which has set and is hard now so shouldnt really flex tooo much.. and plus its bolted in.. and will have uper and lower struts on front and back.. so shouldnt be toooo much flex if any...

thanks i didnt even know that... i might look in to that and nick one out from salvage if its similar size which probably isnt but the a quick trip to the tailor should sort that out :D
thanks so much for alll your input and help guys :D realllly appriciate it :D
Re: Panoramic roof - Project - M33EVL
sorry if i missed this but are you going to put a cross bar in it for stability? what grade plexi is that?

is there a grade of plexi for cut a big hole in you metal roof and replace it with this?
i would think he is using lexan?

yep planning to put a bar across the inside of the roof for support and also push the middle area upwards.
its not plexi, im actually using lexan also known as polycarbonate which is far far stronger. perspex acrylic (plexi) probably would end up sagging on hot days as its such a larg area.. and also crak from the first flex in the roof... ie when i turn or something...
lexan is what bullet proof windows and such are actually made from. So it wont really shatter that easy and its as strong as it gets i guess...
with this i think the melting point was something like 150'C+ before it heats n forms in to another shape.. soo im hoping that temp is nvr the current temp LOL cos then my car would probly melt with the roof...
