Two reasons. It is sprayed with water (or soapy water) so it does not catch and stick to the needles or face. And since it is flexible, you slip the left hole over the needle while rotating the overlay threading the speed needle through the center hole. The right hole has a slit.
I was checking ebay last night. I want blue ones. It is a little pricey, but I like the way they look.
