Factory vs aftermarket stereo pros & cons

Bought a used '08 Aveo last fall. It still has the original AM/FM radio which includes, no CD player, no AUX (audio-in) jack. I don't care about CDs one way or another but the main criteria is that it have an AUX jack for iPod / Mp3 player. At first I was thinking about taking the radio out and attempting to figure out how to connect a cable into it for audio-in. Although I know it's doable, I thought it would be simpler just to replace the whole unit.

There are quite a few OEM units for sale on Ebay that have both CD player and AUX jack.

      My question:

Would I be better off (sound-wise and price-wise) getting an aftermarket unit or going with one of the used OEM ones?

My main criteria at the moment is not to spend much on this project. (up to $100) But of course if the sound is going to be much better with an aftermarket unit then I'd consider going with aftermarket instead.

Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

I have the 2008 Aveo5, which, I believe, has the old style dash, and no On-Star. As far as I know those appeared on the 2009 Aveo5.

Wow, rabbit, those are some good prices... I don't think they'll work for him though.

For the older style dash I've already replaced mine and my father's (he's got an 08 Aveo5) with some aftermarket double-din units. If you're trying to save the money on it for now, check this unit out: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_220 ... Cable.html

That's what we got for my father... It's 120 bucks with iPod control connector included, comes with CD, MP3, AUX in, and free mounting hardware/wiring harness from these guys. Looks OEM in your dash and works well with stock speakers. The shipping was only around 16 bucks or so. (I got a different Sony double-din head unit since I needed the High pass/low pass/pre-sub out capabilities)

The illumination options on the Eclipse radio are green (that matches factory green quite well) and red (if you ever go with LED red upgrade). Hope this helps and good luck with your project.

If you're only looking to spend up to $100 you aren’t getting into an aftermarket, because your going to need all the fittings and adaptors. There going to cost you over $50 easily.
The cheapest way would be to mount in a 2009 and up factory deck. I could sell you mine for $75 plus shipping, it was only in my car for 2 months.

the plug is different on the new dashes. plus the double din to single swap.

The OP and i went to PMs.

There are quite a few radios that have the aux input like the earphone jack type for cheap. Even oem.

Are the 08's only single DIM? I thought they were double too.

Depends if it's a sedan or hatch.

the 08 hatch is the old style dash, i thought i saw a double din radio in the old style dash once. but the plug on the back is different in the hatch until the reface.
