      Help installing new radio

Hey guys I need some help. Yesterday I bought a new stereo for my car and it had a different connector, and I didn't have a wiring harness so my friend and I decided to crimp the wires together (I know it was a stupid idea...)

We followed this guide - 2006 Chevrolet Aveo Car Audio Wiring Diagram

and we connected the corresponding colors to the ones on the new radio, but now the radio fails to even power on...

On the new radio there is no dimmer/illumination wire which kind of confuses me, but I'm pretty sure I have wired them correctly. My friend crimped the wires together just buy twisting them and we taped them with duct tape could that be the problem?

Yes this may be the problem. crimping implies that you took solder-less connectors and CRIMPED them together with crimpers. you have simply connected the wires with duct tape (not even close to correct). now please dont take any offense to this but you need to focus on 3 main wires:
Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Orange
Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Yellow
      Car Radio Ground Wire: Black
Make sure that you get connectors from your local radio shack or other electronic retail store and correctly crimp these together. if you dont have these connections mated correctly they can get loose and spark or just give you nothing.. give that a try. I think this may solve your problem.
