Probably don't have too... I guess you could use a heat gun with it still in the car if you're careful. Removing the shifter certainly does make it easier, though.

I'm not sure how well a heat gun would work mainly because everything else in the area of the shift knob is plastic too, and will melt faster than the knob itself, you may end up with more damage than its worth.
That's another reason why an aftermarket shifter, whethere short-shift or not, would be nice...Put the knob on that you want, install it and throw the stock piece out...no boiling needed.
Get me a stocker and I shall ask the machinists...
