Looking to improve the sound of my "new" Aveo

So I just bought a 2009 Aveo5. I've been spoiled because the car I've been driving for the past 8 years (2002 Jeep Liberty) had their "premium" sound system installed. It wasn't amazing, but it was better than most cars stock. On top of that, one of the rear speakers in the Aveo sounds like it's blown so I definitely need to fix it soon.

First of all, I'll say that I'm not looking to deck this thing out. I don't really have the money or the need. So I'd like to stay away from adding anything extra like amps and subs. I'd like to try to do it all myself, which will probably be challenging but doable. But that means I'd like to stick to replacing stock items. So I was thinking of getting a new HU and front and rear speakers.

Anyway, the main question I want to ask is about the rear speakers. I've been reading the forums and I've found a lot about the front door speakers (get shallow 6.5", spacer, etc), but I've found relatively little about the ones in the hatch. Crutchfield says to put like 3.5" speakers in there, but I know the ones in there are 4x6. But will any 4x6 fit in there pretty easily? I'd like to stay away from anything more than very minor modifications because I don't want to screw anything up. And is there a guide somewhere about how to get to them? It seems like it would be pretty easy, but I didn't see any screws and I don't want to go prying at random pieces of plastic.

Oh, one other thing. Do most 2009 Aveos have tweeters? Mine does, but I've seen almost no topics about tweeters and I was curious. Are those pretty much one size? If I'm going to the trouble to replace the rest of the speakers, I figure I might as well get some nice replacements for those too.

If you do a search you find how to get the pillar trims off. You can see how I add my Frt. tweeters then up graded them on my Cardomain Pg.9 You will have to buy speaker Connectors if you do not want to cut your speaker wiring. The 4x6 screws go on the under side . You will have to pop up the inner trim clips on the fuzz plastic trim to get to the screws, or pry it out of the way. :D Have fun. Oh just about any 4x6 will fit. I run cap on the 4x6's so all most no bass goes to them piggy back some 6-1/2's back there

I was told that the size of the Aveo speakers won't put out quality sound w/o a sub and amp, but I'm not entirely sure. I'm lookinf for a solution myself

Subs aren't for quality without bigger powered speakers all around. I'm running 6.5"s in the door and 6x9s in the rear hatch powered by a Kenwood 600w amp. No subs for me, take up too much space and weight

Thanks for the input! Do I need to buy connectors for the speakers in the hatch or just for the tweeters? I took a quick peek behind the felt and it looked like the speaker wires were connected to the car wires by something that clipped together.

Yea I believe they clip together

I cut the factory connectors and spliced on some spades... I'm still having an internal debate about whether or not I want a sub... the sound really could use some added bass with the powered speakers... but my amp is way too powerful for "a little bass"

600 watts will be plenty for a little bass! Even the littlest bit will do ya' good, Pickles.

As for adding sound quality, any aftermarket speaker could defiantly use some extra power. Luckily for the OP, he can get that from the aftermarket HU.

My advice: get some 2 or 3 way speakers for the front, absolutely as big as you can fit in the door. Do yourself a favor and upgrade from the 4x6's That size speaker could probably do nothing in terms of reproducing any kind of bass, which would be a nice touch since you're trying to bump up SQ a little bit.

^the 600w amp is for my speakers... I have a 500w rms amp laying around but it is too powerful and overpowers the speakers

I just put in Alpine 6 1/2's in the front. Sounds much better

Which Alpines did you put in there? 1" spacer? Can you get the windows down all the way still?

I'm sure that I probably can't get them down all the way. I was too tired to play with the housing to make a decent fit. I'll let you know tonight how I make out

I'm going to go with 1 inch spacers. It should be enough space for the windows to fully come down. Hopfully I can find them locally

Ok, so the bigger speakers did not work out the way I wanted them to. I purchased a variety of spacers and they sat out too far to put the door panel back on. I guess you could cut the space on the door panel where the speakers sit.

Well, I'm pretty sure there are slim pioneers that fit with a spacer. I'll probably get those rather than start cutting into the door.

Also, if I got a new HU, would I be able to keep the steering wheel controls? I found a topic on it, but there were no replies...

Really want a good sound system in my car. If I get some shallow 6.5's in the front and 4x6's in the back. Think this will add enough crispness in the sound and bump up the bass? Will I need to get an amp. Not sure how or where to install one of those. Not to car savy, but I'm hoping to learn with some simple modifications. Any recommendations on speakers for both the front and back? Thanks!

just about any 4x6 will be very little improvement. 6x9s are where its at

Hey guys i am new on here and to introduce myself my name is Jesse and i am a car person and know how to work on them. I am trying to take the door panel off of my 2009 Aveo5 lt and i dont know where the screw is located on the door with ELECTRIC windows and door locks. I am trying to change the speakers in the doors. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Hey Pickles just curious what you had to do to put 6x9's in the back i am wanting to do this and not sure of how to go about it? Do they fit with the seat belt roller back there in the area of the 4x6? If you have pics that would be great. I am going with 5.25 component speakers in the front and replacing my factory tweeter and thinking about getting a loaded sub for under the front passenger seat. Anyone done this that you know of? I am not sure how it will fit.

Hey Geo, I just wanted to let you know that when I installed my 6.5" door speakers I cut the panel to fit the speaker in, it works great and looks better in the way that you can actually see the speaker, my opinion anyway lol.

Geo, I used a dremmel tool to cut out the peice of panel it was super easy! The speakers are persicion acoustic 6.5 " if i am remembering correctly i believe they are 90 watts rms and 280 watts peak. They are pretty decent sounding, but I think i am upgrading to MTX component speakers to go with my two MTX jackhammer subs.

Here is what i did to improve the sound in my Aveo5 lt. Attachment 7037 I am putting a total of 4 in there. The borad is 40 1/4 x 10 inch x 1/2 inch thick mdf with 1x2 pine running long ways. I am going to be running a "70 watt" old school punch amp to all 4 of them off of a AVIC 930bt head unit. I will update when i can get the other 2 in and hear how they sound. I am also upgrading the doors to 5.25 inch speaker ran straight from the head unit.

I have a 2007 LS 4 door. I installed all Infinity Kappa system. 3 1/2 two way in front doors and 6 1/2 three way in back. Put a 12" sub in 2cuft box all running throu the infinity 5 amp. I'm using a Clarion HU. Talk about a crisp clean thumping sound. WOW. The sub in velcroed in the back passenger side facing the trunk, if i need room i just pull out the sub. The Amp is mounted in the trunk but above. I used heat sink compound and using the car as a heatsink. I will not use the speaker covers due to prying eyes. I keep it all stock looking.
