My daughter took her 2009 Aveo5 LT in for new tires. National Tire & Battery said she needed new shocks & struts and quoted her $1300. Seems sort of pricey. I think the struts were $287 apiece. Does that sound reasonable?

Well how do the shocks feel? Does the car 'bounce' more than once if you push on one corner of the car? Do they squeak or make noise? If it feels pretty solid on the road I would run them as is. Usually you will know when they are getting bad as the car will handle unpredictable and usually make noises over bumps. Just changing them out for no specific reason is a bit wasteful in my opinion.
This outfit is a rip-off specialist, trying to take advantage of anyone who might fall for the pitch. They almost certainly do this as a regular practice. If I was given a quote like this by a tire shop, that would be the last time I'd be shopping there. And I'd also try to find an online feedback site to post this information, trying to warn others of what this outfit tries to pull.

I bought the Sensen kit from Rock Auto for ours, along with new rear shock mounts - parts was a total of $160 with shipping for all 4 corners.
Took me about 2 hours to install everything, and then another 40 bucks for an alignment.
1300 bucks is obscene - that's almost 3 times what I paid for the entire damn car...
First of all here is $100-110 buck hour not dealer so you saved 200 doing struts and shocks. You did not have tired changed balanced mounted and batt. NOT to say that that shop is not a little step on prices. But if he does all the him self he still going to pay more then you did.
Not sure if he got a tire de-mounting re-installing tools.
I paid for my struts $187 each + 2 hard ware kits and I use my old springs almost 2 two yr ago and did the job.in Canada it cost more all the time.
Fisrt find out what the rates are in your area and get a price from a dealer. then you have lower and the higher price to see the norm is. Most time if you shop on line at big shops you will get better prices, but you have to wait for parts. you have to see better for you to spent time doing the job or having some one do it some times. If you have to take time off lost money to save a few bucks it may not be worth it for some people.

This new set up is Messed up! at CarDomain. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3101276
I paid $450 to have all 4 corners replaced at a shop. $1300 is a major rip off.
2004 Aveo beater car
2005 Aveo LT. 5-speed beater car (DOA)
If your car is still near 37, 000 miles I would doubt the struts need replacing now.
The price seems super steep and I've seen simmilar tactic used on my friends only to have a look at it myself and end up fixing it for 1/10th of the quoted price.
I would be extremely hesitant and get a 2nd or 3rd opinion from a mechanically enclined friend or a different shop or two.
Hell for that much you could do the coilover swap and it handle better than ever before
I drop about 350 for new coils and shocks and lowed my car too boot. It's a rip off
Please do not power off, firmware update pending.....
