When your tires irregularly wear or if the tires are not all at the same and correct tire pressure it can cause the tires to be loud. You didn't really provide much detail as to what the sound sounded like. It could be a bearing going bad or that you just need new tires.
is it when your coasting or braking?
Could just be a rock in the shield as well. Put on parking brake. Jack vehicle up and take the tire off. Rotate the hub around a few time and see if you can identify the noise maker. Check for groves in your brake disk and see if you have something stuck between the pads. Check the brake pad thickness as well. Move the hub up and down and see if it is loose. Move it also from side to side and check for looseness again.
