Any rear brake conversion kits out there?

I wanna know if there are any rear brake conversion kits for the Aveo in the market...

      I mean I was checking out this: http://www.dlspeedonline.com/proddetail ... d=PDSR0342

And it says Rear with ABS, but it doesn't say conversion or anything like that, and I'm a newb with this stuff so I'm not sure if it would work...

Does anybody know if it works, would work or has worked?

Also what about fronts? Are they worth it?

That is for the drum rear with ABS...there is not yet a rear disk conversion produced for the Aveo.

aftermarket discs on the front are definitely worth it. I'm running the r1 slotted/drilled... definitely better stopping performance.

As far as a conversion: kits usually run near a grand ( I think a rear conversion for my Jetta is around $850+shipping), so unless you're going to be racing/rallying, I wouldn't consider the cost vs safety gain practical. You figure most of your braking is coming from the front brakes in either case (up to a 9:1 ratio).

To put a kit together yourself, on the other hand, would be much cheaper.

The benefit comes in brake fade. Generally discs will give you more reliable stopping power at higher temperatures and cool off faster than drums. I've only encountered noticeable brake fade a few times on public roads... and wouldn't consider a conversion based on those few situations. A simple change in driving habits can easily counter these situations if you frequent mountains on your day to day drive (lower gear coming down).
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far the wall moves after you hit it.

I want a rear disk brake mainly for asthetics. Face it, disks look better than drums, nuff said.

Mabye I'll go to a brake performance shop to see what it would take.

it's pretty much just finding a car with the same wheel base as the aveo and then sizing it up

I have a rear disc conversion kit from a 93 Ford Probe that I am going to try to get to fit, only problem is that the Probe is 5x114.5...

Is it a matter of finding the right fitment, like lug pattern, size, diameter, ect.

Or is it simpler or harder than that?

I'll look into having a wilwood rear disc conversion made.

It's hard to say what pricing would be like. For example, I have a kit for a ~99 civic that is a rear disc conversion AND upgrade to 10.9" drilled/slotted rotor w/ 2 pistons calipers, it loses 5lbs per side in the rear. The front is 12.2" (or 11") drilled/slotted rotors w/ 4 piston calipers. With a choice of nearly any brake pads. It's only $1,450. As another example, a factory style rear disc conversion for that car could easily be more than that new, and hard to find used.

Also keep in mind that's a BBK upgrade all around, but its the only rear disc conversion I've delt with thus far so it was the only example I had.

btw the front brakes are 65%-85% of braking. The stiffer the suspension/chassis the more even it's likely to be. Also the bigger the brakes (BBKs) then it's more likely to be more on the front cause of weight distrib.

My opinion on the cosmetic side of a rear disc conversion is that drums look like complete crap. When I see a car that has a decent amount of money into it, but then rear drums it really bring down the entire car. Especialy with wheels. That's one of my pet peeves (sp?) though, that and huge wheels with tiny discs...though on that side of things I understand BBKs can be costly.

I'm really addicted to trying to find at least some upgraded brakes for all 4 wheels mainly for the looks, every time I look through my aftermarket wheels I see the crappy stock stuff and I just smirk and go "bleh"...

Next time you go get your wheels rotated, take a step back, about 20ft or so from your car and seriously notice how ridiculously SMALL the stock stuff looks, its ridiculous!

I think we could look into the Saturn 1992 coupe for a decent rear disc setup. Thats what they are using on the Lanos, just a matter of fabricating the correct brackets/mounts for the calipers and what not.

      Thats one Idea.
