I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on this. Any idea on how far the wheel will be spaced out from where it is now originally?

I am leaning towards 1/2". but it might, might be 10mm. Depends on the needs.
sorry for not posting here for a bit...I might have to drop out of this, just bought a ton of new parts to get my car reliable enough again -___- and there's still a ton more to buy fml
1/2 inch Damn i gota buy new spacers again. Oh well
Well, I'm still in, I have 1/2 in spacers sitting on a shelf for the rear. Just took them off the rear about 6 months ago.....
I should elaborate the space will be either 1/2" or 10mm. The difference in offset will be different. As the width of the hub to drum and hub to disk are different too, but I need to still measure that.
I hope my wheel setup will work without having to pull fenders. :p
1/2 spacing....that could be a problem...I have 1" spacers/lug adapters for my wheels so 1.5" of spacing will be huge
Just get 1/2 inch ones! It should make the same spacing you have now.
but then I will have to cut my lugs, and the spacers arent cheap at 300 for 4. I spent all my money on spacers so now I still need tires and coilovers. I have the wheels waiting to be installed
vw spacers just use longer bolts, and are cheaper, and you would only need 2.
Good news and bad news. The mock up is ready.
However it is 1/2" and although we are still working on a final design it looks like it will also require a drop added so the bolt patterns do not interfere. This might be good for you to run mk2 rear struts because you'll be lower without bottoming out the strut. That means a better ride.
but I think it will definitely squash interest. ( I for one don't know if I could not raise my coils up enough to account for a drop plate)
thoughts?
How much lower are we talkin?
For the coilover guys theres a guy on one of the vw forums that makes camber plates if fitment is an issue.
Still working on how much of a drop, I am going for as little as possible. He's initial thought was to make it like one of his drop plates in 2.5 -3.5" range of drop.. I think with a few design changes I can get it down to about 1/2-3/4". But he has the measurements and the pieces at this time. Not me.
so it stands at 1/2" drop, and it is a 1/2" thick plate as well. still need to measure the "offset" difference.
Any Pics ?
Just the cad drawings, which i am not allowed to share.
arrived today..

Sweet......
There are few things that need addressed
The other issues that really come in is the caliper carrier mount, it needs to be mounted before the drum, IT seems easier to assemble everything than bolt it onto the car.
I need to clearance the axle, there is some extra meat back there for whatever reason. And it hits the caliper.
I also need to try fitting a mk4 caliper instead. there is very little clearance to the strut. (I can't say how much until i clearance the axle and actually mount both carrier bolts at the same time.
Ill let the pictures speak for themselves.

If any of you have any further ideas/questions, lmk, what is needed, it will be easy to work out.
I dont like that the pictures stay pictures once i try to edit it, if you want to see the thumb get big, drag the picture to a new tab and change "thumb" to "large" and you will see it full size.
Oh offset change is about +8 mm
Not going to say my measurement was exact. As I didn't have help holding the straight edges to the surfaces. But it's close to that.
Holy rust... looks great so now what?
I'm sending the necessary adjustments to the plate maker. They will be ready to go on their end.
I am pretty sure the mk4 calipers will clear but I am also going to eliminate my helper springs to add clearance.
Once I know it will fit, and what is necessary for the swap. I'll give it the green light.
Rust= results of 48000 miles and 5 winters in North Eastern US.
I'm glad to see this coming along. Rabbit, you only have 48k on your car? My 09 just flipped 51. :D
I did 36k in the first two years. Less than 5 a year since.
'08 just rolled over 100,000 miles!
I've thought it would be nifty to have rear disks too, but I don't know how it would be worth the work for me...
Hey rabbit any update on this? And the adapter plate looks bout 1/4in thick so it will space the rear wheels out aswell right?
the final offset change is about 8mm per side, the guy that made me the adapter plates is available for orders.
shakatu, it is worth doing, because you would only do it once. and then the replacement if ever needed is about the same price as doing the drums. And the design gives you better rear bearings, that hold up nicely.
How much is the adapter? And did u figure out which caliper we should use or should we just get all the pieces from the vw mk4?
I would love to see a list of everything needed to do this conversion properly! For all you out there with an 09+ im doing the rear end conversion on mine this weekend pictures will be posted!
you want a complete mk2/mk3 rear disk set up with a mk4 caliper.
i spent $50 for everything for the conversion out of a junk yard, and i believe its $115 for the adapters.
if buying brand new you would need this:
Volkswagen Golf III 2.0 Braking Caliper ES#1928186 Rear Drum To Disc Brake Conversion Kit - 4 Lug - EBK698226A2A34R
this kit uses the mk4 caliper already. only thing left is adapting the E brake.
Does it matter if it comes from jetta vs a golf? Don't they have the same suspension/brake setup
yes they do.. the jetta and golf are the same/different just like a aveo sedan and hatch.
Rabbit, I'm down for this if you still have one/can get one made
