I leave for work at 5 am before the salt trucks and I would like something better than stock that goes in the snow. I have to pull out on a hill sometimes from a stand still and this can be a problem. I'm not looking to break the bank here and also can I get by with just 2 tires or is 4 a MUST have?

im not sure if 4 is an absolute must. but tire stores will tell you that you need match sets of four (i think to sell two more tires).
I have two 185/60r14 studded snows here that I ran on the back for two seasons. They will work on the front but might be a little knobby around bends until they wear a little. Free, If your interested, I will measure them when I get home.
Unfortunately mine has 15's or I would def be interested. Yea I always wondered if you really need all 4 tires. This car gets me back and forth to work everyday from Scott Township to Oakland. Steel rims would be another possibility. Do those tires come with rims?

I do not have rims, i could probably get you some cheap though.
It is worth it to get rims and snow tires though, because you do not have to pay for mountings/dismounting 2 times a year.
I have to say though, the aveo does well in the snow. I am still on summer only driving on the snow covered roads yesterday. My snows go on tonight though.
If your only in scott i'm surprised we haven't seen each other, I live in Dormont, but am in scott and greentree multiple times a day.
free is a pretty good deal.here in southern ont u cant run studded tires so u may want to check with local bylaws.i always pick up spare rims to mount winters(used 20-30 each steelies)u can buy most vw wheels 4x100 67.1 centre bore.also saturn,aveo ,pontiac wave all fit.this makes picking up used easy as well.honda,toyota,nissan do not fit centre bore too small even if they are 4x100 bolt pattern.i just bought some vw jetta aluminum rims with 4 nice winters for 100.00 cad.
forgot about the 4 tire thing.if a shop puts something on your car that is considered dangerous they are opening themselves to a law suite.this is the reason they want u to do 4 tires in stead of 2.(we can sue for any reason now adays).so unwritten code is 4 tires or they dont want to take a chance (they claim its the law)but smaller used tire places do it all day long.
also,u can use 14 inch rims and tires for the winter,aveo stock was 14 steel rim and the lt had upgraded 15 inch aluminum.but 14-17 inch rims fit,u just adjust sidewall size to fit to vehichle
Yes if you have a line on some cheep steelies that would be great. The oem tire size is 185/55/15 and they don't seem to be real popular at Flynns or Tire Rack. I don't really care if I go to 14's for winter. On the other hand My oem tires do have 31k on them now so I know that don't help but they do have tread left.
