When I install new struts/suspension and lowering springs, do I need to compress the spring before it is installed?
When I install new struts/suspension and lowering springs, do I need to compress the spring before it is installed?
yes. I took a look at the harbor freight tool and decided they were too crappy to even recommend. Check your local auto parts store. Here is the same tool for northern
Performance Tool Professional Strut Spring Compressor, Model# W89322 | Specialty Tools| Northern Tool + Equipment
I use that exact set. They work nicely.
DO NOT undo the top bolt with out compressing the spring. If you do, get your cuz to film it while you say "hey ya watch this" and we can then nominate you for a Darwin award.
Do get an impact driver. This I can recommend from Harbor Freight
Electric Impact Wrench - 1/2"
That tool helps in compressing the springs. Remember to do a little at a time on both sides.
Good Luck Young Padawan.

Oh yeah read up on some tutorials on swapping around the springs and struts. Pay attention to how you take it apart and take lots of pictures. Also it never hurts to put new busing in the front:

Check my thread on coilovers vs springs http://www.aveoforum.com/forum/f85/c...-shocks-19473/. I cover some of the info there. I got better shocks I also spent about 80 bucks more. I have no comments on the shocks. Make sure they are correct springs for the application.

My only comment on the wheels, don't get them. My wheels have crap that goes outside the rim plane and their messed up from hitting curbs. I did it again today, dang it.

You must always be extremely careful when working. Check with you vehicle's manual before performing work so that you are familiar with your specific car's systems.
