THANK YOU Aveo Forum - Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement

THANK YOU!! My fiance's '05 Aveo was GROWLING over 45mph and I figured it was a rear wheel bearing. Some internet research showed that it was an "assembly." Chevy dealership: $140.00++, Autozone: $35.00.

Repair was simple. Tire off, dust cap off, 1 1/4inch nut removed, drum assembly off. Reverse to finish. Torque axle nut to 145ft/lbs.

Searching this forum had all the answers i needed to be confident I was doing it right. I hardly broke a sweat in the Florida heat.

Your welcome! I did this not that long ago also. Without using the forums. Took me 2 days to find somewhere that had it for a reasonable cost.

I just did the same thing on my '06 Aveo. It happened by accident. I was going to buy the cheap ($62 + tax) bearing at Auto Zone, buy a drum and hope to heat the drum to around 450 degrees and drop the new bearing in. This was going to save me from removing the old bearing from the old drum with the use of a butane torch. When the counter guy at AZ showed me the new drum I noticed it had a bearing in it already.

My mechanic wanted $250 + or -... I paid $37 plus tax! I can go through six of these and and still break even.

      THANKS!

My first time changing the rear bearings....Do you just use a screwdriver to get the dust cap off? Will I need to disassemble the brakes (springs) to do this job? Thanks!

A screwdriver and a hammer is all you need to remove the dust cap, and theres no need to touch the brake assembly. The drum might be a bit difficult to pull off past the pad wear ridge, but if you hit that with a file it'll be much easier to reassemble.

OK...I am able to get the dust caps off...Thank You!!

Is this now just a matter of removing the 1 1/4 nut? Does everything come out easily once that is removed?

I see that there is what looks like a "retaining gasket" that would seem to hold the wheel bearing firmly in place. This "gasket" is almost a complete circle, almost like a horse shoe. It has a hole at each end....should these holes be pinched together, allowing the piece (gasket) to be removed? Does this make sense?

      Many thanks!

Thats a snap ring. If you ordered the whole rear hub assembly, all you need to do is pound out the stake on the axle nut and pull the old hub off and slip the new one on. Tighten the the nut and then stake it.

Theres what she looks like. Remove parts 3, 4, 5 and 6 and you can pull the hub assembly (#7) off of the spindle
