thinking about new rims/tires
I'm thinking about getting new rims and tires. I like the Primax 659's and they are within my price range. I found them on Wheelsnext.com . I'm just not sure what size I want to go with. I will, and have, admitted before that I am not really knowledgeable about cars so I am not too sure what the best size to go with would be. My Aveo5 is my only vehicle. I drive a lot. (just hit 7000 and Ive had her for almost 5 months) My dad and boyfriend thing I should go as big as possible. I was only looking to go to a 15" but not thinking about 16". I dont know how I feel at all about 17". I just want my car to look nice. Also, the bigger you go, the more expensive they are.....so that holds me back too.
I know 15" are easier to come by at shops...(i wanted rims for my last car, a 95 nissan sentra, with 13" wheels and i had just busted a tire so i had all new ones, so i didnt want to go any bigger, and the place i went to laughed at me for wanting 13" rims. I was really annoyed so I never returned the catalogs that he "NEEDED" back. lol....i'm bitter like that :P )
Anyways, what I am trying to say, is if I do go bigger, are there consequences? Good or Bad.....

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
2 things come to mind:
1) If you go too big/wide, you can end up with tires that rub when you turn and compress the suspension a lot - like when turning into somewhat steep driveway entrances. (I don't think this will be a problem if you're only thinking about 15's or 16's.)
Personally, I'm not a fan of the really large wheels - makes vehicles look like Tonka toys to my eyes - but that's only my opinion.
2) If you increase the outside diameter of the tire compared to stock, your speedometer/odometer won't be accurate any more (assuming they are now :) ). EG - a larger tire circumference would cause your speedo/odo to read lower than actual.
That may not be an issue for you - if you figure out the % difference, you can compensate to be at the "correct" speed when you need to be. 2 of my cars have a bigger circumference than stock, and it doesn't bother me much.

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
Another consequence of going bigger is a rougher ride since the sidewall of the tire isn't as thick and therefore won't absorb bumps as much.
IMO 15s or 16s look good. Tirerack.com has a nice comparison feature. The only thing is they don't have the wheels you want.

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
Thanks! I probably wont be purchasing anything anytime soon. I've got a bunch of other stuff to save up for that is higher on the priority list than playing with my car. lol.
In all actuality, I will probably end up going with a 15". Just because I don't want to change too much about how it rides.
Once I do get new wheels I'll be painting my calipers to match my car. :)

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
The 17"s would look better if it would be lowered. :D 8)

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
just when I thought I had made up my mind about my rims....i may have changed my mind. :( Instead of 15", I am going to go with 16".....this may change again since bigger means more $$$. I wish i could see an aveo like mine with the different sizes and styles. None of the virtual programs have my color, or Aveo's at all. :(
and I dont have photoshop to work with either. :(
Anyways. Probably wont be getting them till later in the year, but now i'll be checking out my options for 16".

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
If you want my opinion, I've had just about every size rims on my Aveo. I've got a whole shed full of 4x100 wheels I've tried on the Aveo. 13x10's, 14's(several sets), 15x7's, 15x8's(which do not fit btw), 16x7s(several sets), 17x7's and 17x7.5's. I have a thread with a bunch of them on my car too, but I didn't have time to take pics of all of them: http://aveonetwork.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=115. In my honest opinion I have been the happiest with 16's as far as overall look. Not too big, but not tiny either. I loved my 17x7.5's, but you can't really lower your car much on those. So, I will be running 16's for winter and staggered offset 15's for summer so I can drop really low. I would go with 16's if I were you. Check out discounttiredirect.com. They have cheap wheel and tire deals all the time, that come mounted and balanced and I think they may still be doing free shipping. I'll check.

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
Ok, I didn't know what kind of wheels and tires you're interested in, but I just tried it out with these Liquid Metal "Static" wheels:
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...qstasang-1.jpg
with these 205/40/R16 Falken Ziex ZE-512 tires, which gives you a wider more aggressive footprint for better performance but you would still be able lower some on these later if you wanted:
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b.../falhh3ang.jpg
All this for $763 shipped to your door in Orlando, and I believe they come mounted and balanced and they come with the new lug nuts you will need. They've got a bunch of other wheels and tires too, so check em' out. Good luck.
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
what website did you find the static wheels on? I couldnt find them on discounttiredirect.com
I am hoping to find something in black, and accented with chrome (since that is the palette that the car is).
I originally wanted to do color matched, but the powder coating place I know doesnt have a color identical to mine and cant make it, so i am sticking with black and chrome.
I want something that will be able to show the calipers, which I will eventually paint to match the car. Might find a place to powder coat them to match the car.

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
Don't search by car, search wheels by size 16x7 4x100.
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
hey wolfman! I checked out the static wheels....... you didnt tell me u were buying them for me (at $155 ea) lol
Call me cheap but my budget is less than $100 a wheel :)
they are nice though.....
I checked all the 4 x 100's.....you saying any of those would work on the aveo? Or does it still need to be certain additional specifications? (ofcoarse 4 bolt pattern)
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
They will fit as long as the hub bore on them is more than 56.6mm I think. I'm pretty sure that's what ours are, but most aftermarket rims are made to accommodate nearly any 4x100 car as they can sell more this way. You may just need to get hub centric rings if the bore is too big, but I've run without them before with no problems as long as you use acorn style lug nuts. Like I said, those rims were just an example. You can get some really cheap deals on there on rims. $100 a rim is pretty easy to find.

The "4" in the "4x100" IS the number of bolts, so it's not a separate specification. :) :P

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
Oh. I feel dumb now.
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
4bolts x 100mm. No biggie, how else are you gonna learn unless you ask. 8)
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
Kind of like 17" rims are not all created equal... the second number matters too... 17x7 will fit, 17x7.5 (7.5" wide) may fit (depending on your drop and offset)... And 17x8 most likely won't fit. unless you're using spacers (i.e. the aveo extreme, I think they're actually wider than 8" in the back).
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
8" wide will not fit without the assistance of a sledge hammer, trust me I've tried. My MSR 17 were 7.5. It was close, but cleared...probably would've rubbed if I dropped it. I think mine were +35et, can't remember.

I'm thinking of adding these spacers to push the rear wheels out an 1"
That will make my wheels flush with the fender lip.
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
Don't think width will be a problem. I'm back to thinking about 15". :/ who said women are fickle! Lol good thing I'm not buying them for a while, huh?

I think you would actually probably need to go a little more to make it flush, but if 1" is all you want to run they'll work. Just keep in mind you'll probably have to trim your stock studs a little for the wheel to sit flush against the spacer.

Wolf, I'm running MSR's 17x7.5 (Style 044) and I'm dropped on H&R's (1.5 front and 1.4 front, no cutting springs for me), and no rubbing whatsoever. 205/40/17 fits nicely on them too. Very happy with the set-up.
The only 17's that MSR offers in 7.5 width are style 044 (lowest offset +40, style 138 (+42), style 092 (but they don't come in 4x100 until 18"x7.5), style 090 (+35 :!: ), style 043 (also a +35, that's what master_mind is running I believe, but he's not dropped yet), and style 049 (+40)... So yours were either 043 or 090... why did you get rid of them if you don't mind asking? Do they not handle well in snow??? 8)
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
I had MSR 138's, 17x7.5 +35et 4x100 with 205/40R17 Cooper Zeon ZPT's. They were nice, the tires were terrible for winter though, I couldn't even get out of my driveway with them on so I eventually swapped them for Bridgestone Potenza GRID's. They were decent.

i think he is talking about "aveo flush" where the face of the rim fill the wheel well, not "vortex flush" where the lip of the wheel sticks out past the 1/4.

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
So, I was looking on craigs list and found a set of rims that I need opinions on.
They are asking $300 OBO. Figured I start at $200..
They are 17" (didnt want that big but its a pretty good deal) comes with tires.
His listing:
"I have for sale a set of black with polished lip Drag Concept Rims. Rims are in excellent condition with no scratches what so ever. The rims came off a Chevy Cobalt, so these rims will fit any 4x100 bolt pattern vehicle. The tires are Faulken with about 50-60% life left in them. I am asking for $300 OBO for everything."
I emailed him to see if they were still available because they were listed in the beginning of May..... asked if I could check them out tomorrow. I also asked him about the tire dimensions in the email
What do you guys think!!!?????!?!!!
I need help :)

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
Those are nice, but I can't stand rims that have the universal 4-lug bolt holes showing...or universal 4 lugs anyways...just a personal preference for me, I want as much strength in my rims as possible and extra holes in the hub reduces structural integrity and increases the chance of shearing a wheel. That's just me though, I drive hard...I'm sure you're a lot nicer to your car than I am. :D
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
I am not too crazy about the extra holes either....more to keep clean.... But if he listed them a month ago and still is trying to sell them I may be able to get them for $200 which I couldn't pass up! He hasn't responded yet either. So idk if he still even has them. What will 17's do to my mileage though, is still in the back of my head. Would it be a simple change to go back and forth between 17's and say, 15's? If they are 17 x 7-7.5 will I need any modifications for them to fit? And without any, would they rub?
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
You should look into the cost of the replacement rubber, because that will be a cost in the near future.
That is one of the major reasons why people sell there rims.
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
I looked up just 17" tires and they run about $100-150 and up. That is something I gotta think about, but he hasn't gotten back to me so I assume he had already sold them.

Just my U.S. $0.02, you might want to look into lowering Kalos if you go with 17"s since she will look awkward sitting up that high.

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
A decent tire that is ok for normal driving, could be a lot less, like a total for 4 would be @ $240 shipped. (cheapest i found quickly was $205 shipped)..
try tires-easy.com, ebay, treaddepot.com, etc.
a lot of the "no name" tires in performance sizes are just renamed better brands, and are even made in the same factory. but you need to know what your looking at, be willing to take a chance (on performance not safety they are dot approved), etc.
firestone or ntb will consider a lot of brands as a "no name tires" that have actually been proven to be as good or better that what they sell.
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
got any suggestions of non-name brand companies that are okay? Or info that would tell me that they are okay?
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
the fuzions zri is a decent tire for daily driving, not that great if you get too aggressive, i think ntb even carries it, at tires-easy they would be @ $240 shipped.
most nankangs are good, make sure it has an aggressive V tread pattern, the "typical" treads wear fast. about the same price at tires easy..
ive owned a set of triangles, they were decent, help better than the oem dunlops on my audi. for a light car like the aveo they will stick well enough.. they are a under $50 each at tireseasy.
the falken 502 is $54 each, that is an amazing street tire. i auto crossed a set on my aveo, held very well.
its all about your budget figure out what the mounting balancing and alignment will be. i personally would get the falken 502s again. but they dont carry them in my current size..
keep in mind "performance" tires have a lower treadwear, so they most likely wont last 40k miles like touring tires..

Re: thinking about new rims/tires
Just sold my iPhone 4 and made a nice bit of $$$$ so I have enough to seriously start thinking about buying new wheels!! I still am a little too fickle to make a decision, but at least I have the money now.
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
You didn't like your iPhone 4 or something? Or rims just sounded better? 8)
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
There were 3 upgrades available on our account so I preordered the first one last Tuesday with intentions of selling it on eBay. I listed it but was able to find someone in the area to buy it for a better profit. I'll tell you that I made enough to buy another iPhone 4 when I want plus rims/tires! :)
win win. :)
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
Sure does sound like a win/win situation. Did you make up your mind about which rims you wanna get yet?
-
Re: thinking about new rims/tires
I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the Primax rims that are photoshopped onto Kalos. My only hesitation with them is that I haven't been able to check them out in person and that I kinda wanted flat black. Like I said, I have the funds at least and now just need to make up my mind. It seriuosly could still be a few months before anything is put on. :/
