Tire Wear Question

I have an unmodified 2009 Aveo 5 LT. The issue I'm having is that the stock tires are wearing more on the outside of the tires than the inside. The when I took the car in for a warranty issue the dealer did an alignment on it. The former front tires were so bad that the outside lugs were almost totally worn off while the inside was like new. Is this from accelerating while cornering, or is there something wrong with my alignment? I switched the fronts to the rear to start over, since wear is uniform in the rear and I'm starting to notice it's happening again. I've been paying close attention to not accelerate hard while turning, but the outsides are starting to wear more than the inside again. Please advise!!!

It's usually from turning your wheels that pulling out from a stop. Like an intersection, making a right or left turn from a stop. if you turn your wheel the whole way in one direction, you can see the top of the tire leans out a little.
Is wears slightly while at speeds through a turn as well.

The factory tires are terrible though.

You can adjust tire pressure, and alter the alignment slightly to fix this.

I also have a 09 Aveo with tire wear problems. I drive 100% hwy miles. I Replaced first tire at 11k miles, and the next 2 at 23k one original back tire looks great more than half tread still there the rest of the tires are bald! this car has had 3 alignments by 3 different shops all shops say the alignment was perfect. GM says this is normal tire wear and there is nothing wrong.
The Aveo Is A piece of Garbage!!!! This Is the LAST GM Vechle I will ever own! Dealer wont do anything, I called GM and they dont care ether so Im done with GM!!!!!!

my stock tires looked new after 30k miles

rabbit has said many times that the factory tires on the 2nd gen aveos are not very good, not like they cost much to begin with anyways, must be an import fan though, what a silly reason to hate a car

the car is junk because the tires that cost $34 a piece only last 11k miles on your car? mine were bald at 4k.. the dealer replaced them under warranty without me asking and they didn't last long either, i bought real tires and they have been on my car over 15k and are still nice.

try different tires before writing the car off?

The car is junk because it has tire problems, it has alarm problems, it shuts off for no reason, power windows dont work,sunroof is falling apart, and I can go on and on!!! it has been in the shop 10 times in 6 months!
I dont know where your getting tires, but here the Firestone firehawk GT 185-55R15 is $138 each.
I bought this from a GM dealer that lost there GM franchise with the re-structuring. The dealer I take it to for repairs didnt sell me the car so they really dont care!
This car is the biggest piece of Junk I have ever owned! and it will be the LAST GM Junk I will ever own!

dudes i just bought 4 tires and it was $80 bucks. for 15 inch wheels. Goodyears mounted and all

I guess your car is junk if you had to maintain it

in defense, $34 is the price of the 14" kumhos.. even so, much better tires can be had in the 15" variety for @ $50 each, plus shipping and mounting for a total @ $300..

i paid $120/ea for 18" Nexen N7000 tires.....

Statistics say that about 5% all al cars produced are 'junk' cars regardless of brand, for one reason or another things not not fit properly due to manufacture defects, I had a Ford Focus like that, it would break down every month and I got it new, my brother had a Accord and the same thing, it was trash... Its possible ur car is one of those unfortunate 'lemons'. My OEM tires lasted me about 45k! I don't remenber the brand, I think Continentals, in a cheap car like the Aveo the factory will switch parts around to be cost effective. I have 55k on my car now, 17' wheels with cheap generic DIAMOND BACK low pro tires and 'zero wear' showing on them, so far the car have being a 'jewel' only think I have changed so far in 55k is the serpentine acessories belt and idler gear. So I love it...

I can't stand when a person has a bad experience with 1 domestic car and has a canniption fit cuzs it's a lemon swearing off all Domestics forever. Even the Japanese have lemons. The car my dad has now is a 2006 Nissan Maxima, which he traded in his 1994 Ford Ranger XLT extended cab 3.0L V6 4x4 on. That truck had more problems than any vehicle he's ever owned. I remember just poking the dashboard out of curiosity once and trim pieces fell off. At 120,000 miles, the entire bottom end of the engine blew out and we had it rebuilt. The truck just got worse and worse after that with something breaking every few months. The brake lines, I remember were THE biggest b*tch about that truck as they had different size couplings on each end. The front axle and diff were shot so it was RWD only. The only things that truck had going for it was the 5 speed manual transmission never had any problem, and the ride was COMFY! He traded it in having had enough of the truck on that Maxima. Within the first week, the Nissan was in the shop, under warranty, to have the 12 volt outlets fixed, which they were, only to break again a month later. Other than that, the Nissan hasn't given us any problems. But Dad says he won't ever buy a Ford product again (That Ranger wasn't the first crap car we've had from the blue oval of death.) but says he would trade his Nissan in on a lower range Chevrolet or GM or even Chrysler product in a heartbeat.

Imagine being a Lexus owner and buying a $60,000 car and having the inside of all four tires worn down to the belts at TEN THOUSAND MILES. Don't like it? Get used to it, unless you spend $1400 on Michelin tires. THEN they'll last MAYBE 20,000 miles.

Tire wear issues don't mean that a car is junk. Hell no. Alignment specs are often tweaked after a car is released to correct driveability issues, such as how a vehicle acts during extreme braking, or an emergency lane change.

We aren't allowed to do that at the dealership.

It's basically the same response you'll get as if you ask the dealership to remove the top speed limiter. It is a safety issue.

Never said I'd bring it to the dealership. I have a mechanic I use who our family has been using for 20 years. He always makes sure everything's done right.

Ugh. I can't stand Lexus owners. They're so pompous and think they're better than you. I once got in a fight with a Lexus owner when I said, truthfully, that Lexus is just a rebadged Toyota.

i'm a vw person.. a long with a quite a few others.

lexus feeds their customer pompousness though, our local lexus dealers have free day spa services while you get your vehicle serviced.

my $45k audi, and $38k audi both did that, every 10k miles... this is what turned me to using "cheap" performance tires. they would last at least the 10k miles of tires 2-5x their price.

Agreed. I have had outstanding luck with NEXEN tires. Also Riken.

All I'm gona say is today there are no 'bad' cars, just a lemon here and there or a manufacture defect every so oftem...

I am now on my third set of front tires and I am 74000 miles. Personally I think the suspension and mcphearson suspensions is worth about a hill of beans. My second set of tires could have last longer but the struts gave out. I have a three year contract for alighments and they would not even do the last alignment because the struts gave out. Now I am waiting on the cash and get some coilover shocks. Then I will have a setup that will work better for tires and speed.

I agree with Aveo Garbage. This is the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. Uneven tire wear, check engine lights, rattles and squeaks, I knew it was cheap, but it is falling apart. And who in this thread called it a domestic? Its a daewoo from Korea. I was just looking at the new Fit sport, thats what Chevy needs to copy to get back in the game.

and i am sure you have "justifiable" reasons why your aveo is junk, but that does not mean they all are. Nor does it mean your own is, it just means you drive it enough and recognize all the flaws, how many miles? my friends honda fit rattled and shaked at 20k..

Hey, the Fit is a better car all around, no questions there, to me at least, but it cost way more too, parts are way more expensive also, but to say the Aveo is junk is wrong, my Aveo is great and Chevrolet so far has given me great customer service, so, u just got a lemon, witch happen sometimes, I had a Focus and a Explorer and they where lemons, my friends Focus on the other hand was great, when u get a car like that best thing to do is get ready of it and move on to something else, and yes u will probably lose some money, it happens sometimes...

I looked at a Scion Equalivant (I forget the model number) and I did want a honda, but for the cash my special value with after market AC was way cheaper than both. I have manual locks and windows, don't want the automatics. I wanted a car that was cheap to buy, own and maintain and I got it. Granted I think certain aspects of the car could be better, and I got what I paid for. BTW I threw out the Scion as the trunk space was in USELESS. Even the junk in my pants was bigger. The Aveo has decent trunk space. I used to carry about three different size folding bicycles in my trunk and still have room for other stuff.

i think the fit does cost more, way more than the aveo, but its not necessarily better. And for the price you pay for a fit, you open up to a lot of other better choices.

I agree, the Aveo is a good value for the money, I payd $9000 for my Special Value otd, the cheapest Fit I could fine was $15k+dealer fees and Honda was not wiling to negociate at all. Toyota was wiling to deal but their cheapest car was $17k! Also looked at the KIA Rio, a little nicer than the Aveo but the Aveo was a hatch and I knew if I ever wanted to sup it would look great, the Rio was just too conservative of a design to look good modified. My car has 55k now and so far only thing Ive changed was the Serpentine(acessorie) belt. Now I'm getting ready to do the timing belt, autch!

I love Hondas(in ur face Hunter!) but for the money of a Fit or Civic, I figure, I rather trow in a few more bucks and get a Malibu or something else...

ive never liked honda, driven a lot of them though, but the feel disconnected from the road and still cheapish, even the 30k dollar ones.. for how much an "entry" level honda costs i would be happier in a vw (start at $16k new) but if i was spending that much anyhow, i'd pick up a 2-4 year old s4.

i prefer rear beam fwd cars, i'd rather feel the road and be a 3 legged dog anytime...

Dose any one have a set of tires on there car there happy with my vehicle only has 100 miles on it just got it yesterday and i here lots of people not getting much out of them they are kinda noisy but can deal with it maybe ill let GM buy my next set and then buy then Michelin may make a good tire for this car i looked at the Firestone Firehawk GT and there $100.43 each any one have them? Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels has a few but i would rather buy local

what size tires are you looking for? i like falken 502, fantastic performance tire that is affordable online.. if its available in the size your hunting go with it.. kumho ecsta, nexen n3000, nitto, etc all make great compact sport tires for half the price of american brand builders like firestone, goodyear, etc.

i just picked up a set of sunny tires, i'll post how i like them if i get them on this season..
