we've got 17x7 +40's and they JUST fit. no way you could go a wider offset or width

you could actually probably go a slightly wider offset on the rear, as the front and rear tracks are slightly different.

the fronts on ours are very close to the guard, while still a fair amount of room on the rear

edit: the front track is 1450mm, while the rear is 1410, so the rears should tuck in about 2cm more than the fronts

15x7 99 Miata rims will work if you bore out the center hub a bit

the jetta/golf gl, gls, trek, tdi, and k2 should all fit. They're 4x100, but I can't recall the offset. I'll check the clearance once it gets warmer out.

The GLXs and GTis (anything with a vr6 in it) are a 5 lug, so don't bother looking.

      offset?

I'm looking at the Konig Britelite or Feather, they are both very close to 15lbs and have a 40mm offset and are 16x7

      The Motegi MR7's at 16x7 have a 42mm offset and weigh 20lbs a piece

Which offset will tuck the tires under in the wells better? or is it so close it doesn't matter?

      tire will probably be 205/50/16

I have +40 offset on mine. Its a perfect fit(flush) for the fronts, the rear tucks a tad but thats just because of the bodylines. I would not go any lower than +40. Heres a pic
