Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Slamdit,
You only need to connect the wires to the plug at the firewall, not the ECM. I did this in my 08 Aveo 5 and it works like factory cruise. I used the negative wire from some speaker wire I had that had small spade connectors already connected and put shink wrap tube on them for isolation. Connect them to the 2 outer pins as the post says and then connect to the two green/white wires at the plug and presto, cruise control.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Ok so I go to my GM dealer and ask them to order me a cruise control switch for my 07 Aveo 5 SVM? Then follow the Guide listed above and it should work just like a factory install? Just want to be sure. We have the 2 Aveo and are still getting killed by the gas prices so any help would be GREAT!!!

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I have to get this done soon! It would definitely improve on gas milage and also would relax my foot on highway drives which is about 60% of what I do!

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Mine are both 07's, is there a part number for the switch? That would make it all alot easier.

Is your car a manual tranny? Does it make a difference? So this thing works like a factory one. You press the brakes or clutch it comes off?
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Bigs,
Yes my car is a manual tranny. Don't think it matters. Yes works like factory, touch brakes or clutch and it disengages, coast and accelerate work too. I have to give credit to khan4tist for this as it was his post that had the link to the old board with the info for the part number and wires to tap. This is a really simple, CHEAP, and must do mod if you do not have cruise control. It works believe me you will be glad you did it. I can't live without it.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
This is the link I used. Again credit to khan4tist for finding it originally.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
So I don't even need to go under the hood? This can be done all inside the car? Is the hearness prewired wven if there is no cruise? This is what I get from that link. I want to make sure before I crew something up!
Thanks for all this info!

Thanks for all this info!
Yes as far as the 2006 Aveos go it can be done without going under the hood....I dont know about the 2008 Aveo sedans though, they might have a different wiring setup. But I'd bet my bottom dollar that you can still do this mod on 2008 Aveos if you find the right scehmatics.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
from my understanding the 2007 and 2008s are hit and miss with the wiring... some have it already run, some don't.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Alright! I guess I'll have to check that out!
When I do this mod, I'm going to write up a DIY for the 08 sedan!
Thanks for all the info guys!
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
For my 2007 sedan, it was a miss. Mine wasn't pre-wired for cruise. Hopefully I'll be able to get it done this summer though... I'd like it done before then, considering I'll be driving back to NY from FL.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I'm sure it is. I'll have to take pics of my install.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Anybody have a part number?
Long story short. I need a part number.
Thanks
jason
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I just did the install...
20 bucks for the switch, 10 bucks for the wires and connectors, total of 30 bucks for cruise control.
I'm stoked, worked out perfect. Bought some 22 gauge hookup wire, 1/4" female connectors, and two clamp splicers. The only problem ive come up with is how to mount it and where. Right now its sitting on top of the steering wheel, but i want to mount it somewhere more permanent.
Great writeup!

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
And do you, by chance, have a part number. My parts guys were idiots when I went asking.
Thanks
Jason

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
so since many people are doing this, is it possible for someone to post pictures of what to do where? not just words

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I decided to give this a try and it worked very well. I invested an hour of my time, $19.76 in the cruise control switch #96433106, used some speaker wire and loom I had laying around, one tywrap, a GM pigtail from a 2005 GMC pickup as it had the connectors I needed to connect to the switch, and electrical tape to get the job done. First, I routed the loom/wire from the connection under the dash, over the top of the steering column (under the dash) and up through the tunnel to the shifter. At that point, I cut a small slit in the shifter column material and routed the two wires through it to connect to the switch. I used two connectors that I stripped out of the GMC pigtail and attached them to the wire whereupon I attached the connectors to the cruise control switch. (The connectors are also available at your auto parts store as they're standard GM connectors...take the switch to them and they'll match up the correct size and sell them to you for about a buck each.) I tywrapped the switch to the shifter so it's right there by my right hand. It works very, very well!
Keep in mind that the cruise control light in the instrument display will not work unless you connect one of the two inner posts on the switch and run a third wire to the white connector. I didn't mess with this as I don't need a light to tell me when the cruise is activated.
I'll post 1,2,3,4,5 type instructions when I get a little more time. The big thing is to either solder the connections at the connector or connect the wiring using the same method recommended by most remote start companies - if you can't solder, strip back about 1/2" of insulation off the target wire and split the individual stands of wires in half. Feed the new wire that you'll route to the cruise control switch in between the strands and twist the new wire around the main wire pulling the strands back together. Then secure with some quality electrical tape.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
shouldnt these things mount straight to ur steering wheel? i mean even if u only used doublesided sticky tape...
i see a prob with where alaskes cruise is mounted and that is this-get a passenger in ur car and as u put it in 5th and get comfy, ur passenger bumps ur cruise switch and knocks you out of cruise. i, sometimes hit my passengers legs when i go into 5th once in while and i have had people bump the shifter and such as well when its in. if you dont have passengers ever then thats great and you wont have many probs but if you do have passengers often, well then......

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
+1
i see what you mean, but i thought i read earlier in this thread that people place the switch in a diff location other than the wheel area so they dont void the warrantee.
other than that, i think i am an effing retard. because i cannot find the white plug to save my life. :| i am lost; thus explains hy i have not atempted this yet.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I wedged mine in the little cubby space beneath the radio. that way it is easy to reach and out of the way. It even looks like it might belong there.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I actually considered three places, the cubby space as mentioned, screwing it to the storage area under the cigarette lighter/ash tray and the shifter column. The beauty of the way I ran the wiring is I can move it to any of the three locations to see which one will work best.
As for being mounted on the shifter and hitting the passenger's leg, if they're that big I'll take the F-350.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I checked for the switch location on my 08... On my steering wheel, there is a little door that can be popped off exactly where the CC switch would be installed from the dealer. Could it not be installed there? Or do we need special hardware?
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
just a curiousity, anyone know if this can be done to an 04?

The only problem with that is when you turn the wheel the wires going to the switch will need to be able to stretch or when you make that left turn out of your driveway the wires will rip out.
I haven't gotten my switch yet but when i do I'm thinking about mounting it to the e-break handle.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
there most probably is a connection that can be made directly to the clockspring and then to the harness.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
OK I looked at these pics posted (posted from the link on page 4)
We are support to TAP in wire/pin #6 and #7 as per below diagram right?
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f4...rm/pinout1.jpg
NOW... If you look at this closely, he's tapped in pin #1 and #12 and not #6 & #7 as the diag above states..
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f4...m/100_0623.jpg
So I'm all mixed up. First off, my harness colours don't match in my ride. If I refer to the pictures, it should be the top one and it should be white. My top harness is grey and the bottom one is white. On both harnesses, I have wires running on both pins #6 and #7, actually, they are pretty much full of wires!
So, is it the top harness I should use no matter what? Should I be connecting to pins 1 and 12? Man o man... If you look closely at the diagram, the clip is facing upwards, on the picture, he is holding the clip downwards. Not sure if anyone is catching my drift?
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
maybe the diagram shows the other side of the connector.
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Does anyone have a shovel so I can smack myself on the side of the head?
Man, why the F... haven't I thought of that... lol
OK, now I guess I have to use the top connector even though mine is grey...?
-
Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
You want to use the wires in the bottom white plug and not the top one. Look at my pictures again and you'll see it is the bottom white plug and the wires are on the bottom of that plug or in other words, the plug closest to the floor and the wires you want are in the two rows closest to the floor.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Now, this may be a very dumb question, but I have seen some LS's with cruise, both standard and automatic, the same as my LT has.
Knowing cars, or car manufacturers as I do, I would assme that all Aveos at least 07 & 08 models have the connection in the wheel for Cruise, just don't have the controller on them because that is an option. Would I be wrong in believing this?
If this infact is the case, I would assume a cruise control switch from the dealer, maybe a fuse, and it would be, for the most, plug and play.
Now, mind you, I am not saying that this is infact the case, but seeings as the Aveo is an assembly line car, I would think that the oprions, minus the doors, would already have the options installed, just not in action. But I can't prove this. And I won't claim it to be true, which is why I am merely asking the question.

I know my '06 is all prewired. Only options missing are the sunroof and tweeters in the A-pillars, yet the wiring is all there.

Thanks Mang! I see it! Kinda hard to take a pic under there!
Now I'm ready to rock! Thanks again everyone for your help.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
I followed instructions for installing cruise control on my 2008 hatch back and everything works as reported. I tried to install the cruise switch on the steering wheel but could not locate wiring within the steering wheel assembly. So instead I installed the cruise switch on the plastic piece just behind the steering wheel. I can see the switch easily through the top half of the steering wheel. I had to modify the back of switch (part number 96813273) so that it could be mounted on the plastic cover. After removing the excess plastic for better fit I made a hole in the cover so that I could plug the 2 wires from firewall into back of switch.
To make access to firewall easier I would suggest removal of the plastic and metal panels at knee level. The plastic snaps in and out. The hood release handle can also be unsnapped. The metal knee panel below the plastic cover can then be removed by taking out the 10mm bolts. I had help with the wiring; but basically the firewall connector (with the 2 green and white wires) was unplugged from the firewall for better access. 2 wires were tinned with solder and then pushed into the connector where the 2 green/white wires come out of the connector. Too much solder will may make the wire too large to share the hole with green/white wire. I really appreciate the help given by everyone. Sorry no pictures to show, but hope the verbal description helps.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
Okay, well, I stand corrected. apparently even though it is an assembly line car, not all the options are built into the steeringwheel (based on last post).
I also noticed this on the steering wheel audio controls (from the 2008 LT to the 2007 LS). The place for the controller is there, however, the wiring for the controller is not. Now, i am not an expert, by any means, but I would assume (there I go assuming again) that the ability is there, and it would probably not be hard to wire the switch (on the 07-09 sedan, or the 09 hatch). But again, as stated before, I am just guessing on this.

Re: The cruise control DIY thread.
So has anyone figured out how to run the switch to the steering wheel? I've installed the switch and everything but I hate stuffing it in the ashtray, just wondering if a new clock spring is actually needed to mount in correctly.
