Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
Does anyone know how to disable daytime running light. I have an 09' Aveo hatch and I just got 12000K HIDs for it and I dont want to burn them out, because they're on all the time. I live in Alaska and we are moving into the time of year where her shortly we will be in 24hour daylight for the next several months, so I have no need for daytime running light in the sun.

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
Do what I do. If you only have a single filament HID then during the day put the switch on to brights, that way no power is going to the bulbs.

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
they is a DIY here. you unplug the drl relay on the firewall.

I ordered the bi-level kit for highs and lows, so I can't just switch to highs lol. I'll look for the DIY and see if that works.

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
There is an easy way, which is the route I went. The handbrake on our cars disable them when it is engaged, by a little button in that assembly. Pull off the leather glove around the handbrake and you'll see the button with a wire attached to it with a clip. That wire is connected to the button and when pressed makes contact with the ground part of the car, so splice into that wire and put a switch on it and connect the otherside to a ground on the car. The handbrake light will stay on but I haven't noticed it distracting because it isn't overly bright.

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
here in nova scotia we have a law about DRL
cars equipped with DRL can't be de-activated
and cars without them must have their headlights on at all time

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
Your also not supposed to do 100's of other things to your car but who cares....besides the cops.

exactly but the cops are the main problem
i don't really fell like getting a $267 for something like that

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
I still haven't done it yet. I think our DRL's pull 45 watts and regular low beams pull 55 watts. I upgraded to HIDs which pull only 35 watts so when my DRLs engage it's no different from my lowbeams. I'm not gonna worry about disconnecting them, replacement bulbs for my HIDs are like 14 bucks.

That's the purpose of DRL... some illumination during daylight so as to be better seen, not to see better. To preserve your expensive lamps, I'd install some fog lamps and run a circuit to those. Or, install some bulbs in the headlamp specifically for DRL. I'm certain with some creative thought, a solution can be found.

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
Like I said I'm not worried about it. It's not doing any harm, it'll just wear out my bulbs faster but they're like 14 bucks for replacement HIDs where I got them. I need to swap my bulbs to 8000K this winter anyways.

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
the 09 aveo has a fuse in the side of the dash labeled DRL...
just saying.
-
Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
Well, that's useful. Who'dve thought it'd be that easy lol. Thanks.

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
how do you find the hids?

I bought mine from vvme.com. They were cheap, like 70 or 80 bucks I think for my lows and highs. They work great too.

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
Haha, I just went and tried that fuse on the side of the dash and it works. Wow, that was worth the 10 seconds it took lol. I thought I had to crwal under the dash and look for a DRL relay to unplug that's why I've been so lazy about doing it this summer.

Hey guys, just to let you know there are 2 body types for the Aveo.
The T200 covers:
04-06 Sedans
04-08 Hatch
The T250 covers:
07+ Sedans
09+ Hatch
Therefore any information you guys need shouldn't be too hard to find. Of course there are slight differences from year to year, but the main stuff should be the same (ie: Fuse block, DRL setup...etc).
Of course, starting in 09, you guys have a new engine, but the body type is the same.

I've never been to a drive in movie before. We don't have any.

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
i just pulled the fuse when i did it. simplest way and doesn't affect anything.

i live on a hill, and strated my car all the time with the ebrake on.
the lever has a switch that turns the lights off, yes, but they come back on as soon as you let the lever off ?
are you sure you don't just pull the ebrake and see them go off, walk out and check and they are off. but then come on as soon as you let the brake off and are moving?

That probably exactly what he did. I thought mine were off too before i pulled the fuse because with the ebrake on they were off. until i noticed the light hittin the apartment wall in front of me everytime i released it. haha.
just pull the drl fuse and you're good. it doesn't effect your gauge lights (like my old truck), nor headlights or anything. simple fix.
I do have the BASE model 09 aveo5 though. only factory option i have is AC and thats cause i told them i won't buy it without it so they installed it for me. i don't know if LT versions or anything is different (i highly doubt they're different)

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
All the aveos are the same, the DRL headlights turn on with a 45watt trigger whenever the e-brake is disengaged. On 09 aveos the fuse is in the box on the drivers side of the dash. 04-08 aveo however I think you have to unplug the DRL relay under the driver side of the dash. I think it's grey.
-
Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
yeah i have my ebrake engaged and then turn on my car and they dont come on, or the fuse things sounds easy too. the only problem is that you need to turn your headlights on in a contruction zone or they could give you a ticket

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
lol I just posted that one page back, I put a switch on my handbrake so I wouldn't have to actually engage my handbrake.

Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
i can't find that drl relay under the dash. i have an 08 aveo ls sedan. help please i just but 6000k hid kit from vvme.com and i don't want to keep them on all the time.
-
Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
if you have an 08 sedan, its probably the fuse in the dash fuse block in the drivers jamb.. marked DRL.
-
Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
i saw a fuse labeled "na drl" pulled it out and it did nothing. i haven't found anything else.
-
Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
that should have been it, stupid question: Did you verify that you dont have the lights turned on?
your car is kind of an odd case, because you have the newer dash/harness, but still have the old engine.
-
Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
yeah, they're off. i did notice the handbrake way to shut them off stop working. i don't know what that means. and i think the car is from 2007 but it is an 08.
-
Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
i think i might buy some hids, are the ones on ebay decent?
-
Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
the vvme.com hid's are nice and cheap. i got the 6000k's hi/lo for like $90 with shipping. the only thing that happened with mine is they got stuck in customs for almost a month.
-
Re: Disable Day-Time Running Lights?
lol that sucks, i might have to check those out
