Anyone know of a aftermarket maker of the rubber part of the mounts, the VW folks have a better rubber than, KYB or monroe.

I know it is an old thread, but it was a great guide for me today. Took me about 6 hrs w/cleanup/setup. The actual replacement took about 4 to do the first one and <1 for the second.
Most of my time was spent trying to get the stinking top mount nut off. I could not just turn it as the strut shaft just rotated, so I had to use a 1/2" mount 19mm Socket in a vice-grip and then a 9mm deep socket through the 1/2" hole. What a pain.
Thanks much for the tutorial!
Could the Monroe 72295 and 72296 be the defective struts that cause the large gap?
I also have a gap and was wondering about it .
If nothing else I am going to install rubber mat or something under spring. I have planned to replace wheel bearings in front to see if that will make it quieter for driving long distance.
I’ve seen loaded struts built with the mount installed upside down.

Just buy the quick struts from RockAuto. Front struts and rear shocks cost $300 or so. And just buyt the rear shock mounts for $40 to save yourself the hassle of getting off the top nut.
