New timing belt idler rubs on cover??

Just installed the new idler that came with my timing belt kit. If I turn it back and forth with a finger on the inner edge (where the belt will ride) the back of the idler rubs against the lip of the inner cover. I've seen this mentioned a time or three, but never with a correction.

Is this just the luck of the draw with parts?
Should I cut out that section of the cover edge?
Go get a new idler?
Or don't worry because it shouldn't affect the belt any?

(Not trying to be paranoid - I just don't know what's waiting to get me!)

is the rubbing only while there is no tension? or is that with it all reassembled?
Can you compare it to the old one and see a difference, installed correctly? no dimples or any alignment pins that is pushing it out?

Is the new belt wider than the old belt? I would make sure every thing is aligned correct. The timing belt is not something you want to neglect.

with no answer from OP.. here is my thought. Its not right, don't use it.

All the parts compared the same in size.
The old idler didn't show any wear from rubbing.
I removed the new idler and then reinstalled it.

I think the inner cover was a touch out of place from bending it up to remove the water pump. After everything was completely finished and buttoned up, the engine started without a hitch and no rubbing was heard. So mebbe I popped the cover back into place?? Or reinstalling the idler did the trick? Or it settled into a new position with a tensioned belt??

Since the top outer cover isn't that big of a deal to get off, maybe an inspection is warranted a week or two down the road??

I would inspect it. That is a part that has exploded a few engines before the timing belt.

Okay - it's on the calendar for two weeks out.
Or less, if noise is heard.

Noise can indicate a problem.
Noise suddenly stopping is a whole 'nuther problem!
