Its been a while since I did mine (roughly 2 years). from what I remember. with vehicle supprted on jack stands or a lift. remove the rear wheels, remove the hubs (recommended to use bunjees or something to support the hubs weight) remove the lower shock mount bolts ( having something the dead axle so it doesnt drop down). carefully lower the dead axle and set the springs to the side. ( this is the part I dont exactly remember) at the front pivot points, (if I remeber correctly) the mounting point on the chassis should have a bolt in front of and in back of the pivot point, remove the two bolts from both sides. and the dead axle should drop down. If I am incorrect about the chassis mount, then their will be a bolt that goes throught the chassis mount and bushing on dead axle, remove that bolt from both sides and it will drop down. Again, its been roughly 2 years since I did mine, and my job as a technician, I have done sever dead axle swaps at work since then. most swaps of this nature will all be similar though. i hope this will atleast head you in the right direction.
Whats the purpose of swapping that axel? Is it just for maintence? Performance? Just curious, I like to learn as much as I can :P
I think you want to put spring compressors on both springs before you unbolt the lower shocks. The design makes it look like the axle will "catapult" when you remove both shock bolts, and the springs will go flying. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, just looks dangerous to do without spring compressors.
Disclaimer: I've never removed the torsion bar... on any car.
That is a good question. I had my aveo supported on the pinchweld jack points, and a had a jack under the crossbeam. so. when I removed the shock bolts, the jack kept the axle assembly from "catapulting". after everything was loose, I lowered the jack and grabbed the springs and set them to the side
it wont drop that far.. but take precautions for safety, your not me.
i just let it drop. you can (well i can) compress the axle back up with the springs in place to put in the bottom strut bolt. just hold it up while you take out the last bolt, then lower it down slowly..
did you buy an axle or just the bushings?
