Routing power wire for amp?
Well, I got the DIY radio install under my belt (thanks BTW), and now I was thinking of adding a stereo amplifier. I know how to install an amp, but when I was looking in the engine bay, I was having a hard time finding a good place to route the power cable from the battery to the pass compartment. Anyone want to help me out? (I tried searching for a bit, but came up empty)
This would be a good one for the FAQ if someone could post up some pics or a link direct.
The plan is to install the amp under the driver's seat, as there is a fair amount of room under there.

I made a hole in one of the grommets on the firewall, thats where i routed my power cable

I don't suppose you have a pic? Or at least tell me if that was on the drivers side or pass. side?
Re: Routing power wire for amp?
It's directly behind the center dash right behind the ash tray..ect. It is accessible from the passenger side and is a black rubber grommet

Hey thanks. I found it. Big sucker, it was almost too obvious.

one thing about mounting the amp under the seats....theres a heater duct right there.
If you use your heat at all, I suppose that might not be the best thing for the amp.
I'm sure it wouldnt be to hard to reroute the air over and away from the amp.
Just thought I'd put this out there.
Re: Routing power wire for amp?
Have you actually felt how much heat comes out of there? It's almost non-existent. Or maybe there's something wrong with mine.
Re: Routing power wire for amp?
I can obviously see the air vents and the wires for the side impact airbags, but is there anything critical under the carpet? Its hard to tell, 'cause there's a pretty thick pad underneath.
Re: Routing power wire for amp?
only thing with mounting amp on floor. drilling into sheet metal for mounting is bad.. will cause rust and holes in your floor.
also if you get a lot of snow or rain and get in your cars with wet or snow covered feet, you might get the amp wet.. whether that is just enough dampness for the housing to corrode, or actually wet to short something i cant say, but i have done both.
also rear passengers with big feet might kick it.
if you are worried about loosing trunk space, you could mount it inside the 1/4 panel. i have seen this done before. you just need to have the right size amp and some skill.
Re: Routing power wire for amp?
When I had the wheels swapped, I noticed that the previous owner had a complete rustproofing/undercoating applied. My theory is that, if I penetrate the underside with my mounting screws, I will spray the area with more rubberized undercoating. That should protect from rust.
The occasion when someone sits in my backseat will be pretty rare, but I know that is a danger.
The amp is going to be driving a pair of bass shakers, so I'll be drilling into the floor either way. But because of space restraints, I may have to fabricate a rack for under the seat, or mount the amp somewhere else.
I'll start a thread in the A/V forum and try to post some pics up once I get the project underway. I have the bass shakers, but I still need the amp.
Re: Routing power wire for amp?
I think all aveos have that rubber coating on the bottom, mine did new from the factory...
Re: Routing power wire for amp?
I ran my power wire along the driver side, from the battery into the fender. From the fender it goes in to the left of your feet. This is the same path the stock wire cluster takes.
The amp is under the seat, screwed to the carpet. Floor mat slightly covers it. I have never had it overheat... not in the Aveo anyway.
