safc2 installation instructions now with PICTURES

These install instructions are for the 2007 hatchback 5 speed aveo. I will check to see if it is the same for previous years, but it must be the 5 speed hatch. Automatic tranny hatches have a different ecu pinout.

Ok, the powertrain control module is under the hood, on the drivers side strut tower. There will be 2 plugs. One on top with a grey connector and one on bottom with a black connector. These are what we will be working with for the install.

Remove battery cables from battery

Now, for both conectors, on the front of the connectors, there is a little clip that will release a lever which will pop the connector off the ECU. Once this is done, you need to remove the black cover that covers the wires, there are clips on both sides. This will allow you to see the pins and wires on top of the connector. Next cut the zip tie holding the wires together, and remove the electrical tape holding the wires together.

You are now ready to install the safcII

On the top grey connector, you will need to connect these wires:

-Purple knock signal wire from afc goes to pin 22 light blue
-gray throttle signal wires from afc goes to pin 41 white
-find the light blue pin 28 MAP sensor signal wire. You are going to cut this wire. You will connect the yellow wire from the afc to the ECU side of the cut wire, and the white wire to the sensor side of the wire.

On the bottom black conector, you will need to connect this wire:

-green tach signal wire from afc goes to grey wire pin 41


Now all you have to do is connect the brown and black wire to a ground, and the red wire to an accessory power source. The other wires (blue, pink and orange), just tape off and dont worry about them, they are for other vehicles. If you have any questions, or need clarification feel free to ask. Thanks.

kool, so now that we know that this isnt a bluff like some other people have on this site. kool so how is the tuning coming along?

Well, im borrowing a wideband sometime this week hopefully, and i have to weld another o2 sensor bung on the exhaust. We will see how it goes. My only worry is that the delphi ecu will recalculate map voltage when being modified, but i wont know until i start to try to tune it. If i am at idle, and load it up on fuel, the idle changes ever so slightly, and vice versa if i pull fuel out, so that is a good sign. I have my fingers crossed, but someone has to be the guinea pig for all this.

If you want RPM sensing, should be grey to white wire @ ECM connector k pin 25.

The tach sense wire on the first post had the correct ecu pinout for rpm. I just had my car off when i took the pictures.

kk my mistake I checked back it was for 04-06.

so are the pinouts the same for 06 manual hatch back?

brian said there is no HP gain with a NA set up. but he will definatley be able to get some gains with a turbo :D

Well i have official word. I street tuned it tonite, the aveo seems to pull about 10.2 to 11.4 a/f at WOT, and after about 30 minutes of playing with the afc doing 2nd and 3rd gear pulls, she pulls consistant 13.0 - 13.2 from 4500rpm to redline. Butt dyno claims small amount of horsepower was made, but wont know for sure until i get it on the dyno at work. I had worries that the Delphi ECU would undermine the afc, which it does, unless its open loop at WOT. Sorry it took so long to respond, i just moved to Columbus, and am now working for Slowmotion Motorsports http://www.slowmotionmotorsports.com if you want to check it out. Any questions feel free to ask, but i have to go, late.

of course, it alters the fuel so you can tune it however you want, no matter what the application

cool it would be nice to see some one try 10.5:1 euro pistons and see some results

so did u put a second bung in and use the wideband 02 sensor or just replace the existing o2 sensor? also did it try and correct itself after all was said and done?

I did weld a bung into the downpipe to accept an AEM Wideband for tuning.

Lets get a couple of things strait:

ECU Modes:
OPEN LOOP - this is the mode your ECU is in until the coolant temperature and a couple other sensors get to operating values. This is also true when you are at WOT or when throwing codes/ CEL's

CLOSED LOOP - the ecu uses information primarily from the Oxygen Sensor and adjusts fuel delivery and timing to achieve minimum emmisions, better gas mileage and power.

Now during normal driving circumstances, you are in closed loop. When the car is cold, or your at WOT, it goes into open loop.

Open loop operation means your engine is, for the most part, being controlled by few variables, and running from preprogrammed maps in the ECU. The SAFC will only change fuel values while in this open loop state, because the engine ignored the o2 sensor, and goes by map, throttle, etc to trim fuel.

Therefore, when the ECU is in open loop at WOT, you can modify map sensor voltage, and therefore tricking the ecu into adding or removing fuel, at WOT only.

To tune, you MUST have the afc set up and wires properly, and you MUST have a wideband o2 sensor. I drove on the expressway, did about 10 3rd gear pulls, carefully monitoring the wideband, and changing the map after each pull until i got the desired air/fuel ratio under WOT for the entire powerband.

This type of tune will not do anything to normal driving or partial throttles, only under high load, WOT pulls.

is it necessary to have the neo hooked into the knock sensor wire? im thinkin of disconnecting it and seeing if that helps to keep me from throwin a knock sensor system error code. i mean according to my autoxray, im not runnin lean, at full throttle i manage to keep it in between the 20-25% short term fuel range. just curious.

anyways, i went out and cut the wire for the knock control sensor and drove around for a bit. drove hard for about 5 minutes then a nice drive for 10 minutes. never threw a code or had one pending. its just i dunno if this will affect any of the tuning that can be done with the neo.

another question:

if the knock sensor is tripped, will that send my car into "limp mode." i ask because if that was the case, then my tunes are not gonna be accurate at all.

Any time you're adjusting their AFR you most certainly want the knock sensor working and hooked up to your ecu or afc (both unless the AFC is a standalone). If you're ECU gets a knock detected signal (usually a couple in a row, I believe) it will go into "limp mode" as you call it. It's a safer fuel map. If you're AFC is still adjusting the fuel injection and doesn't get the signal, and allow the ECU to do what it's supposed to, you run the risk of screwing up the motor. Limp mode is there for a reason.

the knock sensor cable is still hooked into the ecu, just not the AFC. i may reconnect it but i like not throwin codes and the car doesnt stutter anymore on takeoffs and thru the acceleration. we will see. if kirko would log onto aveoclub once in a while to help me out and check his messages lol...jk
