Spark Plug removal for 2008
I would like to change my plugs in my 08 and, after removing the black dust cover (or whatever it's called), I am having a difficult time loosening the boots from the plug wires. Is there a special way to release the boot without damaging the wire? Please advise and thanks in advance!

Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
you can just pull them off, and get a sparkplug socket if you dont already have one to get the plugs out
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
Thanks, Offline---do I need a special tool to yank the boot off?

thehunteroo,
thanks for the tip; will I need a special tool to pull the boot off?

Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
nope just yank it off with your hand, wiggle it around a little to loosen it up and then just pull, but for the plugs themselves is where you need the socket
when you put the wired/boots back on they just plug/snap in, easy
just make sure the gap is right, most plugs are pre-gaped anyways
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
Thanks again---will give it a try!
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
you might needed to use some pliers to get them off as well, takes a bit of force
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
ONLINE/OFFLINE is just his online status. And you are talking about a 1.6 Aveo engine, right? It might be different on European/Asian smaller engines...
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
thats what i assumed, should still be the same
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
Thanks again for the input! No problems with the boots coming off (after yanking them a bit). Car is running smoothly. I used NGK plugs to replace the originals. How often should the plugs be checked for deposits and wear?
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
Depends. Did you get NGK Copper or NGK Iridium?
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
Installed the NGK Platinums---replaced the same as the OEMs
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
Why not iridium? And i thought OEM are not platinum, they're either ACDelco copper or NGK copper.
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
The OEM plugs that were replaced were made in Korea; the new ones were products of Japan. Since this was the first time that I changed the plugs, I played it more on the conservative side, and just stuck with the part/model number. I really know nothing about the differences among the types---copper, platinum, iridium, etc.
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
i also put platinums in. They been in for 30 000 km. so far so good.
Copper plugs last about 50 000km, Platinum should last 100 000km and Iridiums should last 160 000km. I'd take platinums and iridiums out every 50 000k just to re-gap and inspect them. That'll also prevent them from seizing in the head.

I'm not sure I'd try re-gapping the iridiums. you're running a chance of breaking off the sharp point...

shouldn't have any problems with the right tool... paid about 5$ for mine.
Re: Spark Plug removal for 2008
will the gap really change over time? what would cause that?

everytime the spark plug fires, a tiny amount of the tip vapourises, over millions of cycles, the gap will increase... copper vapourises faster than platinum and iridum...
