Thanks again for the input! No problems with the boots coming off (after yanking them a bit). Car is running smoothly. I used NGK plugs to replace the originals. How often should the plugs be checked for deposits and wear?

Depends. Did you get NGK Copper or NGK Iridium?

2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS/TC - SOLD
Installed the NGK Platinums---replaced the same as the OEMs
Why not iridium? And i thought OEM are not platinum, they're either ACDelco copper or NGK copper.

The OEM plugs that were replaced were made in Korea; the new ones were products of Japan. Since this was the first time that I changed the plugs, I played it more on the conservative side, and just stuck with the part/model number. I really know nothing about the differences among the types---copper, platinum, iridium, etc.
i also put platinums in. They been in for 30 000 km. so far so good.
Copper plugs last about 50 000km, Platinum should last 100 000km and Iridiums should last 160 000km. I'd take platinums and iridiums out every 50 000k just to re-gap and inspect them. That'll also prevent them from seizing in the head.
I leased Pontiac Wave from September 2006 to August 2011.
I'm not sure I'd try re-gapping the iridiums. you're running a chance of breaking off the sharp point...Originally Posted by ontarian_frog

will the gap really change over time? what would cause that?

everytime the spark plug fires, a tiny amount of the tip vapourises, over millions of cycles, the gap will increase... copper vapourises faster than platinum and iridum...Originally Posted by serega12
