Post number 3 has a list
Found all the parts for my 09 aveo5 at a wrecking yard off another 09 aveo5. Got it all for $217. Does anyone have that instruction list on how to install.
I found all the parts in wrecking yard for $217 but didnt someone say they had a intructions sheet with pics
it is "sort of" self explanatory. Did you take the pieces off yourself? If you did you just put them back on on your car.
If you did not take them off, Make sure you have all the right parts.
you take the belt off, bolt the compressor on, hook up the wire, and put the new longer belt on.
You take off the air cleaner, bolt the double connection and valve to the firewall port, plug in the pressure switch.
From the long line from the firewall, Run the line from the compressor, run the line to the condenser, make sure to use new orings.
Run the line from the compressor to the condenser, again with new orings.
Then go inside the car, remove the radio surround, pull out the hvac controls, and disconnect the line down by the gas pedal (youll follow it down from the controls) and swap it to one with the ac switch.
Once that is finished, take the car to get the system charged and the ecu ac switched on.
What about the aux cooling fan that is on the aveo with factory A/C. DO i need to put another cooling fan in? Will the single cooling can kick on when the compressor kicks on of is that not necessary.

This is my first post. I thought this might come in handy for those of you who might want to try and charge you AC urself. This is refrigerant capacities for my Aveo5 09 LS.
So I bought all the parts needed for the AC install and followed the steps laid out in this thread. (Great info from everyone so thank you!) I completed the installation and had the system charged at my Navy base for cheap.
However, the clutch is not engaging the compressor. The mechanics at the base helped me troubleshoot and we found that the relay isn't getting energized. When we take the relay out and use two wires to jump the connection, the compressor kicked in fine and produces cold air. We tried changing the relay and still didn't have any luck. Something is preventing the relay from completing the circuit.
I am hoping it is because I didn't have the ECM reprogrammed. I am taking my car into the dealer to have them change the ECM tomorrow (going to cost$200!!!), but I am not sure if that is the problem or not. I thought the AC would still run without the ECM reprogrammed, just the engine's RMPs would be lower. Anyone have any other ideas/suggestions in case the changing the ECM doesn't work?
Thanks!!
Its most likely the ECM, i had to have my ecm programmed for it to work too. I didn't have to pay though, i took the direction to the dealer and did it for free.
The dealer said it would take 2 hours because they have to call GM to get the program which GM sells to them for each specific car brought in. Because GM charges them for each program they have to charge me $200! It sounds completely ridiculous but the guy said they do it all the time for people. From the posts above it sounded like changing the ECM was a fairly easy (less than 10min) but required a Tech II scanner.
When you say you gave the dealer directions did you just give them the flow chart posted above?
So the dealer programmed the ECM to adjust the throttle on the engine. However, they couldn't get the AC to work.
I have been troubleshooting it myself and this is what I have found:
If I jump the AC relay, the compressor kicks in, and I get nice cold air. I know the relay is not broken cause I tested it. There is something that switches the relay "on" (or energizes it), but whatever that is, it isn't switching the relay on.
Any thoughts what that might be?
What do you mean "programmed the ECM"?
There is just an option in the BCM under the IPC in the Tech2 menu to switch AC to yes or something like that. If the dealer had to get a new program from GM, it sounds like an ECM firmware update, not an AC activation. :dontknow:
Where are you located?
The dealer told me that they had to get a a program from GM in order to adjust the throttle. They were able to do that, but when it came to changing the IPC there was no option for AC!! They said they were on the phone with GM for 4 hours trying to figure out why there was no AC option. They also said the computer was programmed as a automatic, but the car is manual. From all this, they suspect that whoever initially setup the computer royally screwed up. The only thing they said they could do from this point was to replace the entire EMC and IPC. I asked if they could just reinstall the entire computer's programming and they said that's not possible.
So you can imagine at this point, after an additional $200 to adjust the throttle, I am very frustrated. I love this car but I can't afford to replace the entire EMC and IPC. So I go home and take the AC relay out and installed a switch between the 30 and 86 prongs. I start the car, click the switch, the compressor engages and i am getting nice cold air! And then..... About 1 min after the compressor engaged... BAMMM!! Something popped and vapor is gushing out everywhere engulfing the entire car in a cloud of gas.
After the smoke clears I check things out. All the seals on the piping looked fine but there was oil on the compressor and splattered around surrounding area. I am assuming the compressor pretty much exploded.
Isn't the compressor meant to run continuously for several minutes??
P.S. the radiator fans are not coming on when the compressor is on. Usually those fans are suppose to go on when the compressor is on.
Any help on this would be much appreciated. I have already put close to $800 into this project and so far I still don't have AC.
I am located in charleston, sc. I bought the car in NY.
It sounds like the pressure valve you used was bad, and the compressor built up pressure until something let go.
The ecu is what turns on the fans, bypassing the things you did and installing a switch eliminated all the safeties you would have had. I am not sure about the dealer issue, i would suggest checking part numbers on the ecu, and running that against your options, if that is really the issue, then buy a cheap ecu with the right options and put it in, hoping you didnt destroy the system with what ever popped.
not sure about the additional cooling fan. wasnt aware the one with factory a/c came with 2 fans....
do you still have the directions for the a/c kit install??
got the parts off a wrecked 09. The parts puller had to pull them of course. I was there watching. Sorry I kept asking. Still trying to learn how to use these forums. I am going to install today and it doesnt look that hard. I dont have the new climate control yet, still looking for that part...thanks, Kevin
going to the junkyard sometime this week to remove an AC system from a 2005 sedan, i have a 2008 first gen hatchback. is there any thing i should know beforehand about removing it? the extent of my engine work is oil changes and cold air intake haha any info for this removal would be much appreciated thanks !
Sorry - I travel alot for my work and I dont get these until later. You may have already got the parts. If not, then as you prob know take metric wrench's from 10mm to 15mm along with a socket set. Its rather simple and you should have any trouble as long as you know lefty loosey righty tighty!!! :) Make sure the freon is drained...
thanks ! it wasnt too bad at all took a few hours in the heat but i got the lines and the compressor for 60 bucks and 20 for the hvac controls. how do i go about cleaning the ends lf the lines where they connect (do they need any lubricant on them or the new o-rings?) and i think its pag46 oil for the compressor, where does the oil go for that ? i read that it goes in after flushing the system, so i assume the shop i take it to for flushing would put it in.
would powerwashing the compressor and flushing the lines with an aerosol kind of flush work for cleaning before i reassemble? and what would be good to clean the hose ends/connect points with so it doesnt mess up the suction? thanks!
the shop should put the oil in yes, i tend to lub o rings with petroleum jelly for ac parts, lightly coating them.
cleaning is tough, if they need cleaned i would use a pure cleaner that dissipates quickly, but honestly you should hope that the condition of the parts, they do not need cleaned.
Good grief thats a flippn smoking deal for those parts. I paid $200 then paid $50 for the temp control. Where are you at that has these parts so damn cheap..LOL. I wouldnt worry about oiling the lines. the o-rings will get plenty once you charge. not sure about the compressor. I am doing my install tomorrow. My local autoparts store are less than desirable and took a damn week to get the new serpentine belt. when you say (page 46) .....page 46 of what?
pag, PAG is the oil used to lubricate the compressor in an AC system. 46 is the type of pag oil used.
installing my a//c today. does anyone know how much freon and compressor oil ill need
appreciate the info. any idea on how much of it. cant imagine it takes that much. I read somewhere that when charging the system i need to add a can of freon and then add a can of compressor oil - I think its freon/oil mixed in a can together or something like that
found it. PAG Oil charge and it has freon mixed in it as well. so I'm guessing a can of that and a can of r-134 should do the trick..
I got my a/c all installed, but it would appear that I too will need to have ecm pregrammed as well. Hard to explain but making arrangements for that to be done is exactly convienent. So I'm wondering if there's any reason I cant simply run wire from the compressor to the new a/c switch then to a hot wire. On - Off. seems simple enough to me. Anyone have a thought on that?????
I mean this as only a temp solution until I can get to a dealer for ecm programming. Im aware that the compressor will run max full time. but right now its a 100 degrees and that's fine with me...
you car will not idle that way, it needs more fuel to idle with ac on.
Hmm. Now thats something I never thought of. Well I may have to do it and only use it while driving - just hook a temp toggle switch. It very well could be 3 weeks before I can get it to a service shop and I use this car for work, driving as many as 18 hrs a day.
Really great info on the a/c install. Cost me $1100 to have mine done 6 years ago on my 06 orange one. Does anyone have any info on installing the aux cooling fan in the a/c. mine went out and I need to replace mine.
you mean on the radiator?
I took my Aveo to an A/C delco where the A/C was installed 6 years ago as the a/c quit working. They noted a problem with the fuse box moutning and wiring that they fixed and that got the A/C going again but said that the "Aux cooling Fan" needs to be replaced. The A/C will blow ice cold while driving it but dies down when in idle or stopped. I thought he said the "A/C Aux cooling fan" or is it one and the same. I dont know. Again A/C blows cold when driving but when stopped the air blows but the temp in the car warms up till you get going again.
Any help is appreciated. His charge to fix it is $220.00.
it is one in the same. The fan will run while stopped to keep the AC cool, blowing the heat off the condenser.
2005 2006 2007 2008 Chevy Aveo Radiator Cooling Fan Assembly on eBay!
you could buy one off ebay and install it, but you need to know if the problem is electrical or the fan itself. It sounds more like an electrical issue based on the information you provided. To be 100% sure the problem is the fan itself, I would test it by unplugging it and providing 12v to the prongs to turn it on. If it runs then the issue is not the fan.
You can do the same in the opposite, but using the plug wiring to run something else, or test for power at the plug with a multimeter. I would hope the mechanic has already done this to verify his repair quote.
Have read through all of the AC threads. Great stuff. Still looking for a bit of specific information. Need to install new compressor in 04. Trying to determine if I can get the old compressor out and the new one in without removing fan? Have worked on AC systems on Ford trucks so I know the DOs and DON'Ts on vacuum, recharging, etc. Have never worked on small car sytem where everything is a tight fit. Thanks!
i think you should be able to, take it in through the bottom?
if you can get it out, then you can get it in. if you cant get it out, stop and pull the fan.
Very easy as it turned out. No fan removal. Did find it simpler to use ramps to get at everything from underneath, and about 30 inches of socket extensions and air tools to remove old mounting bolts. Whole task from the time I started until I had the compressor replaced, new belt on and a vacuum suffient to give the sytem a good recharge was a bit more than an hour and a half.
thanks a lot I used the flow chart to configure the A/C and everything is ok except that the engine rattling little bet in idle only. What I need idle learning or TBS cleaning?
thanks a lot for everyone in this post.
I just installed the parts needed to finish the a/c install on my 2010 Aveo.I cannot get it to work.I used a tech 2 tool to turn it on and it still wouldn't work.I took it to the dealer and they spent a lot of time on the phone with GM and it still doesn't work. The car came with the C66 option so there has to be a way to fix it.I don't know what else to do.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
