From consumers reports:

Car reliability

"Following its bankruptcy filing and shedding the Hummer, Pontiac, and Saturn brands, GM now consists of Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. Of the 48 models we surveyed from those brands, 20 had average scores, and only one, the Malibu V6 sedan, was better than average

On the whole, Japanese vehicles are consistently good. All Hondas and Acuras were average or above. Toyota, with its Lexus and Scion brands providing a broader product range, had just one vehicle that was below average in reliability, the Lexus GS AWD."

So do the math.
I buy stuff based on my impression of the car, not what others think. Consumer reports has been called bias before, not just in the car market, but i could dig up a report showing any manufacturer has the best cars, you just need to look at the group of people being pooled.. but as i said, i dont care about what others think of my car.

As far as reliability, my aveo has 24k miles. broke down one time (fuel pump). thats beats the reliability of my vw r32, two audi a4s, my audi tt, my focus, my hyundai, jetta, mustang, and cadillac My neighbor has a new subaru, 4000 miles and it been to the dealer twice. My really good friend wife traded in her fit because it broke down 3 times in 4 months, it only had 12k miles, He had a focus that he got rid of for the same reason, now he has a 09 civic si. its been to the dealer once as well, i'm not sure of his current mileage but its not as high as my aveo.

So from my experience my aveo is very reliable. but since you want math, look up the number of recalls and tsbs on each. that might even swing the vote your way. but i can guess not one person on this site was asked by consumer reports about their aveo. so lets go with factory response versus "owner" experiences.. for all i know consumer reports got their survey list from "aveo owners with more than 60k and have not changed their timing belts"

is your aveo that much of a problem that you believe all the hype?
