have you noticed how pc's have stopped extensively advertising their processor speeds and such? that is because if you compare them to the macs the processors are "last generation", and now that apple is using intel for their processors the general public pc's will mostly be that way until they spend the money to develop their own and then need to raise prices.

if you compare the specs outside of ram and hd, a comparable to apple built pc laptop is about $800-1100 usually a sony or something. No body bitches about their pricing. And they also have lower ram and hd sizes for that price. But they use higher quality parts, and have more up to date processors.

XJCasper, your laptop is too big so you are going to carry around a desktop? haha.
but there are 10 and 11 inch screen netbook computers out there, but they use netbook processors which are not all the great from the specs i have seen (for the cheap ones) i would say try finding a 13 or 14 inch computer from staples or officemax, usually around $500 (sometimes less) and spend the difference on memory.

      BACK ON TOPIC!

maybe dan should use his ban hammer to break that laptop open.

      Not True.

Simply increasing clock speed only makes the CPU wait for other components.
Clock speed has become less important because other subsystems need to keep up. When shopping CPUs you need to look at front side bus speed, on chip level 2 cache, number of cores, etc.

Hard drives have many factors too, seek time, transfer rate, burst speed, cache memory.

Video cards can increase performance too.

You get what you pay for.

Re: locked out of my laptop

you terminology is definitely better than mine, but that is what i was trying to say.
You understood what i was trying to say i am guessing because you posted the proper terms.

mac users dont have to become programming and hardware experts, so i dont know proper wording.
(ask me about cars, i am more of an expert there, but again terms tend to be regional)

I remember when the report came out that a dual processor g5 rated at 2.2ghz. was proven faster then a pentium whatever rated at 3.5 or some crazy high number (i remember because i was starting to think "pcs have double the speed?") but this article said the "slower" mac was actually 10% faster, and it was the mother board speed etc... like you said that makes the processor fast.

and definitely you listed the things that make the hard drives higher quality. plus a better disc. for a longer life span.

and you are right you get what you pay for, a high quality pc should last just as long as a mac, mac just doesn't build bottom feeders. i forget the name of the company that did try to replicate macs cheaper. but the common failure quality issues put them out of business.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not a Mac hater. I just like to compare apples to apples(no pun intended). It is not fair to compare a 1500 dollar Mac to a 500 dollar PC....but I do like the Mac commercials.

Re: locked out of my laptop

i was comparing it to a VGN-Z790 CTO sony.

they are 13" screen with 2g ram and a 160 g hd without any other options, and cost $1720

      a 13 inch apple macbook with 2g ram and a 160 g hd is $1000.

But a more "fair" comparison would be the macbook pro, it is at the same ghz. more of the same features, and with 2g ram and a 160 hd it comes in at $1200.

that is all, while there are probably about 20-50 $500 notebook sold for every $1700 sony viao. I get tired of the argument that macs cost too much, their prices are actually comparable when looking at similar quality products.

lol anyone who spends that kind of money for a sony is smoking, its just like alienware, they make the computers look good and charge about double of what a normal computer would run for

i still love building my own computers, so much fun when you get them working right lol
