      Nice Shotgun ~ 500$

Does anyone recommend or know of a good shotgun (either 20 or 12 gauge, preferably 12) that goes for around 500$ or less either new or used?

My fiance and I are looking for one to use just for entertainment. We like to skeet shoot and want to get more serious about it this year. I really dont know a whole lot about guns other than just gun safety and common sense.

We have a preference to a double barrel either side by side or over-under, but a single shot or semi-auto will be ok too. Also we would like to get one that could handle up to a magnum round. I know it seems like a stretch.

If you know of one, please let me know and a short description (or long description if you want or have alot of reasons to recommend it) of why you like it. Thank you!!!

Heres an idea of what we want/looking for:

Look at a remington 870 express. It is a single barrel pump action, but is a great starter and all around gun. It has screw in chokes for different patterns and you can buy different barrels if you want a slug barrel. This gun will take 2 3/4 and 3" magnum shells. It is easy to maintain and handle. Stay away from double barrels for your first gun, nothing wrong with them, but more limited and specialized. If you want a semi-auto the remington 11-87 is a good choice.

I have a Norinco 12 gag pump that I use for hunting. It came with a deer and a goose barrel. It’s served me well over these years and I have no plans to get rid of her.
You can get one for under $500.

We looked at an 870 today, it was only 329$ and the guy was telling us how universal it is. We almost sprung on the spot right there but decided we would keep looking. Now that somebody outside a gun shop has said the same thing, we will prolly keep it on top of our list. It felt comfortable too. They only had the 12 ga in stock.

We also looked at a Citori (sp) for ****s n giggles and looked seriously at a stoeger side by side. All 12 ga. We wish we could afford the Citori.

remington 870 is the way to go. if you want to use 3 1/2" shells just get the super mag. i had mine (remington 870 super mag) for 10 years never had any troubles with it.

The citori is made by Browning. a great gun, but kinda like a BMW of guns, very expensive. Usually not a first gun, and not one you want to take out everyday and shoot. It's not a daily driver so to speak.

You will not be sorry with the 870.

I would definately get a 12 ga. first. It is way more versatile. you can shoot really lite loads all the way to hi-brass and magnums. Shells hold more shot so it is a bigger pattern and easier to hit the clays. Shells are cheap and easy to find.
