stupid ricer brochure

well i was driving my car today thinking about some mods to do to make my aveo little more...enjoyable *namely LED placement lol* and i was thinking of all the people that have modded their vehicles *mostly civic's and a grand am*...so hope you guys can share a laugh....



WARNING SIGNS FOR A STUPID RICER

-consider only mods done are intake/exhaust

-believes walmart sells true "racing parts"

-believe they have their vehicle tuned to need higher octane fuel, but have never done an actual compression test...or have done any mods that would actually increase compression

-spray paint...'nuff said

-belief that spark plugs will add horsepower when engine is un-modded and stock plugs have nothing wrong

-talk about how they drift their fwd cars

-talk about waiting for it to rain so they can drift again

-slam their car by cutting stock springs and keeping stock struts, even after changing to after market springs

WAYS TO STILL DO RICER THINGS WITHOUT BEING LABELED A RICER

-if you drift FWD don't brag about it

-understand that getting a new muffler only makes your car louder, making your exhaust less restrictive doesn't add horse on a stock engine..it will actually lower it in some cases

-intakes are o.k. as long as you know it doesn't make your engine "built"

-use performance spark plug wires only as engine dress up

-if you have a loud stereo... conceal it or it will most likely get stolen





-my interpretation of ricers and how to avoid the label :)

..if you have something to add to the list please do so...if your have something to argue please do. I'd love to productively* argue back :)

how about those horribly visible neon tubes. oh and 20" neons are meant for the INTERIOR, not for UNDERCAR!

by advancing timing, you increase your chances of detonation, hence why you need higher octane rated gas. Just the opposite as when detonation occurs, by which your knock sensor will retard the timing.

[nitpick]

You can advance the timing as much as you want and it's not going to detonate. Traditionally detonation/knocking is the air/fuel mixture igniting without a spark (too much heat due to compression). The "knocking" bit happens when you have preignition due to heat... and secondary ignition due to the spark plug. When the two flame fronts collide, you get a "knock."

With advanced ignition timing you want to use a higher octane (slower burning) fuel so that the flame front doesn't hit the piston before it's TDC, to prevent damage to the rod/piston/bearing. This will generally push your peak power to a lower rpm.

but once again...how does that even produce more power? and still it doesn't seem like higher octane fuel would even matter... since higher octane fuel was intended for when the engine runs hot *compression = friction = heat = pre-detonation similar to that of a diesel* and considering that all your doing is changing the timing of the spark...which will detonate the fuel regardless of the octane content. so really i don't see how this would increase power.

and to back up my statement i just read the article on howstuffworks.com about octane ratings and even they mention that the purpose of higher octane is so in a 4 stoke engine the fuel does not pre-ignite during the compression stroke. and they only ever mention having higher octane in a higher compression engine so that it does not pre-ignite. if you wanna read the article to know i'm not BSing

How Octane Works

Because a higher octane rating is going to take more time to detonate after the spark, you can advance timing safely to produce more power. If you advance timing with regular gas, the lower octane gas will ignite before Top Dead Center, causing knock. That's just what exodus was trying to say.

Higher Octane = Harder to detonate = More delay between spark and detonation = less volatile.

lol thank you...i noticed that you posted whilst i was posting lol. i had a couple discussions with peers and it definantly helped and your explanation is the best so i applaud you. lol i guess my argument is...how many pony's are you actually gaining...and is it really worth the xtra 20-40 cents a gallon in gas.

on a side note i've lost alot of respect for ppl that claim they know about cars that really go to a shop and think that every performance part is gonna give them a set X amount of horse. but i'm come to find that really to gain that power you have to have it running with something else and have the engine balanced in a sense...

whether or not it's worth the extra money depends on the driver and situation. If you're a competitive auto/rallycrosser who doesn't want to spend 6Gs on a short ratio gear set, then I'd say yes.

ya know thats interesting that you mentioned that becuz i was having a pretty heated debate with a friend about how it produced power and i was arguing that it would only increase acceleration not actual power. since higher octane fuel as the same amount of btu's as a lower octane fuel. and i was thinking about how you could get more power by having more burn time of the fuel. but it seemed to really contradict itself as you have more time..but a slower burning fuel rather than a shorter time and a shorter burning fuel. lol honestly i really want to experiment and see how much faster lower octane fuel burns in comparison to higher octane...i need to do more research on this.

While advancing the ignition will give you slight gains, it will also increase the combustion temperatures and increase the risk of predetonation, which a higher octane fuel can help fend off.

On the other hand, once you turbo a car, you will need to retard the timing a bit since the compressor will heat up the air and cause detonation. The retarding of the timing DEFINATELY decreases power so a higher octane fuel allows you to keep it.

For example, I was pulling about 14 degrees of timing at 17psi on my Subaru, but at 5psi I didn't have to pull any at all. 17psi was the max boost I could make power, anything above that I had to pull even more timing which decreased the power so it was no longer worth adding boost.

Yes they actually like American stuff but there not into the whole FnF deal. They like the stock look alot. 17's, lip kit or body kit and call it a day. They do like USDM stuff on there big bodies. And they especially love American muscle and Lacs.

Not everyone of us want to look like professor 'Geekster' driving a stock Aveo or Rio or Civic. I did drove mine stock for 3 years, now I'm ready for a new look but don't want to buy a new car yet. A CAI and straight muffler will ad horsepower not reduce it, that's a fact, stock units are highly restrictive due to emission standards. I drive a Aveo, supping it up right now, got the pedestal wing(sacriligious on hatchbacks, but that is what I like), 17' blk wheels, CAI, muffler and a few more bits and pieces done to it. When I can afford a better car I will get a Mazda Speed 3 or a Subaru WRX hatch or maybe a used Viper, untill than, my 'RICER' will do just fine for me! Remenber, as u laugh at someones 'RICER' theres probably someone else pointing at u and laughing at ur ride also! :wink:

This isn't making fun of other people's taste.... unless it's donks. It's making fun of their stupidity. FWD cars can't truly drift. An intake doesn't make your car built. cut springs with stock struts is retarded as it ruins your ride and doesn't do anything for handling/ A CAI is known to add SOME HP, but not alot. My brother has a CAI on his '89 Cavalier Z24 convertible and thinks it adds 50 HP. THAT is ricer logic. But of course you can't tell him anything cuz he thinks he knows everything. GIGANTIC WRX-esque wings aren't needed on cars that produce 150-250 HP at most. And that's being generous. Exceptions being the Chevrolet Cobalt SS.

Being a ricer isn't just about doing retarded things but there's also a mentality to it. Modding a car is ok but don't be an idiot about it. intake/exhaust aren't gonna do much. maybe 15-25 hp at best. There's a difference between ricers, and tuners. the people who do it smartly and don't think a CAI with exhaust upgrades, countless stickers for products the car doesn't have and 22" rims adds 200+ HP.

To fully be a ricer, you have to have a ricer mentality, not just the "sick mods" to go with it. That's what most people don't get is that there's a mentality to it as well. A big wing on a FWD car isn't gonna do anything if the car hasn't been touched performance-wise (as in actual engine mods and suspension changes, not justa a CAI/exhaust and cut springs)
Example. There's a guy around here with a bright red 2003-ish Hyundai Tiburon GT V6. It has WW2-esque face vinyls from the fighter planes on the side. This is the only thing done to it and the guy thinks he's hot sh*t to put it lightly.

I undestand, I did not put the two together and I will agree with u on that. The whole attitude is what ur saying is anoying, more than a stupid looking mod... Got it! I can apreciate a car with a nice body kit As long as it's tastefull and proportional, I mean no giant wing the size of the car! even if it is slow it's ok, sometimes looks is what u want, not performance, can u apreciate that? Just curious. But a beat up civic with half the body kit falling off A giant wing and a set of 18' magnesium rims I think is dumb too! Btw I'm planing to put a WRX scoop on mine and yes it will be functional, I hate fake air scoops.

I'm more into engineering, so to me, it's more about what's under the hood than how it looks. the ONLY cars that have won me over solely with looks have been Italian Lancia's and Alfa Romeo's. The under the hood thing applies to my car. not much to look at but OMG that engine is orgasmic.
