Solar panels collect so little energy compared to what a car uses that it would be fairly useless. There just isn't enough surface area on a car to collect enough power during the day. That, and car really do use tons of energy.

I have no clear understanding of the amount of electricity/energy it takes for an electric car to use, but, I always have ideas that I like having shot down so here goes: my knowledge of electric producing turbines is a magnet spinning in the center of a bundle of tightly woven copper wire, like an alternator. So, if we have a (for sake of ease involving turning radius) fwd drive electric car, could one successfully take and design a rear axle that was fed through the center of a turbine with magnets in the middle attached to the axle, so that when the car was set in motion, the rear axle of the car could generate it's own power? I don't know how fast it would have to spin in order to creat a steady supply of power but is it possible? I know you lose your trunk space and ground clearance would be sketchy but assuming there was an engineer that could conquer this problem through creative design, would this be a long stretch? Does this even make sense, do I need to clarify my idea?

You could do that, but as Darin said, you'd loose range. The reason being is that energy you'd generate isn't free. It would create a drag on the rear wheels and cause you to use more power to go just the same speed. The power generated wouldn't be as much as the additional power needed to move the car. Thus you loose range.

Man, I could barely make out the tank behind all of those stealth covers of brush. 8) nice ride, you should have stayed with that. I wonder what the MPG was in one of those things....

Thanks. I loved my 2.3 Turbo DISI quick engine in my CX-7.

And .1 mile per gallon is fine when you have all that fire power to back it up.
