Finally about to get a job that actually pays decent *crosses fingers*...
Here's the plan: Jetta is currently incapacitated. But new job is only 3 days a week @ 12hrs each day... leaving pleeeeeeenty of time for me to work on it. With any luck by the end of the summer I'll have it back on the road.
Jetta plan:
Stripped completely. Mechanical, wiring, interior, exterior.
Towed to body shop for full respray, same color, white, with satin black molding with the tops of the bumpers also black (http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb27 ... G_0679.jpg)
1.8T swap from an a4, or mk4 jetta. (might do a 2.0T swap, depends on what's available)
Rear disc conversion.
Koni coilovers
28mm adjustable rear sway bar
Stock front sway bar, though might go with a 22mm front, depending on handling once the rear is in place (generally with a front heavy car like this, you want to go BIG in the rear, and leave the front pretty loose).
Front and rear tie bars.
Fully restore interior (this is going to be the hard part!)
Audio will be minimal. Replace headunit and speakers. With quality crisp speakers, don't really want/need an amp or sub.
So why should anyone care? Once the Jetta is complete the aveo is free to mod to death.
My original plan was to make the Jetta into a rally car... but after thinking about it, the aveo would be a much more fun platform. Game plan as follows:
Stripped completely.
Race seats and harness on hand for reference.
Towed for cage installation and seam welding.
Might respray... I'm liking that satin black more and more.
Engine, suspension, etc reinstalled for 1/4" skid plate fitting.
Rewire the bare essentials into a center console mounted fuseblock (for easy access by either driver or co driver).
Center console mounted controls for windshield wipers, lights, fuel kill switch, electrical kill switch and ignition switch.
10gallon fuel cell
Passenger side foot brace (just a steel board for the codriver to brace themselves with).
Rally computer
Intercom
Suspension is up in the air. Will probably run stock for several rallycrosses and a couple rallies. If it proves unbearable, and a sponsor is available, will hopefully be able to source a proflex coilover kit through four star motorsports (they run the swift+ rally car in canada). Last I checked with them, it would be around $5k per kit... would want a backup for sure.
Rear disc conversion is up in the air as well. Will try the drums for a while.
Stainless braided brake lines (if available).
Hydraulic handbrake conversion (really really want to do snodrift, cable handbrakes ice up and bind, not to mention stretch out).
Rollbars would be nice to have available for rallies with lots of pavement (I think there's an all pavement rally up in NY). Otherwise stock is fine for gravel.
15" gravel wheels (steel... if you get a flat, they hold up nicely).
LSD (Looking at you kinkylama!) Would the d16 be do able, or would a d20 offer more options in this area?
Once I have a year of proper experience under my belt, then might consider engine mods and get out of production class and into open class. Depending on whether or not the car can handle it. I'd be happy with mid-front in my class and not last overall
Will hopefully start my new job in may, while working a second to get up some starter funds for the jetta.
I'll also need a decent tow/service vehicle. I'm thinking one of those roadside trucks (the pickups with the onboard air compressor and externally accessible toolboxes) would be cool. Would just need a hitch to attach the car trailier (car will be insured and registered, just not inspected... since it won't pass without airbags).
With any luck the aveo will be ready to go to it's first rally cross by the end of next summer.
