Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
I was shocked at what I once read on a web site about what tall tales about Russia they tell people in America. Or some news are presented incorrectly to make Russia look the evil empire. Like when Georgia (country not the state:) attacked South Osetia and the news told you it was Russia. For instance that interview with a little girl who told the truth that seemed to be a revelation for America. How much other "truth" like that are you guys told? Or somebody just tried to joke on that web site and all that is just very much exaggerated gossip? What do they tell you about Ukraine cutting Russian gas to Europe?
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
I don't follow world news. I know how ****ed up the world is, I don't need daily examples.
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
the media in the us is still profoundly "cold war." did you have a cold war over there too?
this past few months though, they have become enlightened about how Obama is the best president in US history, even though he hasn't been sworn in and hasn't done anything. He doesn't even say what he plans to do, he just says things like "we need to sit down and have a meeting or discussion about this as soon as possible, the congress needs to have this on my desk the second i am sworn into office so i can sign it" Sign what? there haven't been any stories in my area to proclaim what he his doing, other than a "good job" and If i have to see another channel talking about how his wife is going to decorate the white house, or their stupid dog, i am going to go crazy.
Lately, past 5 years or so, the US relies more on speculation than fact. No one can make an announcement of importance without every news station trying to crack the story before the announcement happens.. anything from someone retiring, to going to jail.
so truth be told the US media doesn't care what reasons there are for the wars over there. they just have to say why they think it is happening. Just like currently Israel is bombing the Gaza strip. if that was any other two countries (like Iraq did to Kuwait years ago) it would be considered a terrorist act and the US would invade the "aggressor." But since Israel is our bastard child of a country (take that lightly) we report that it is a self defense from the horrible Arabs in a region. Because all arabs are bad, mmmkay.
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
News is biased everywhere. The news we get is biased, and so is the one you get. You were told something and we were told something else. Who's right? Probably no one.

Yes, "cold war", that's what we did have here a long time ago. But since the socialist propaganda disappeared soon after perestroika we have free access to information. Our world news just show and tell people facts without opinions or telling us what to think.
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
Demokraty- it is a large farce. And you are foolish, that believe in it.
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
Looks like other countries are afraid of Russia, because it has its "own" way of development. It tries to adopt western way of life if hasn't already done so and achieve within a couple of years what took the West a long time to achieve. Needless to say that makes Russia go a unique way. But there is no more "iron fence" there used to be in the Soviet Union. Or it looks like that fence is still maintained by some persons from the other side creating a false and sometimes scaring image of Russia to the rest of the world. For instance yesterday night news showed a high ranking official from a country you know very well of who was saying with confidence that Russia is not giving the gas to poor Ukraine. But he didn't say that Ukraine has always been trying not to pay for the gas, that it is stealing the gas that goes to Europe through the pipeline that is located in Ukraine, thus breakig the contract of gas transfer and leaving some Europian countries without gas in winter. Information has a strong influence on people's minds.
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
I just keep this in mind when I am told something....look at the word history...his-story.
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
I rarely believe anything the mainstream U.S. media says... it's always slanted, either for shock value to improve ratings or socialist propaganda. When I hear something by word of mouth or from a local paper, then I'll believe it.
We're probably not being told "correct" news about any country, just some reporter's spin on it. And if anyone has had the chance to see what kinds of things middle-eastern news channels tell their people about the U.S., well, you won't trust the media at all.
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
Hey chevy_driver, I read this doing a little stock rersearch. Is it true?
"The big driver of that is affordability. A can of Red Bull is more expensive in Russia than a pack of Marlboros. Parliament, a premium brand, costs less than a Snickers bar in the Ukraine."
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
I don't know what prices in Ukraine are and for Russia I confirm what VilSouth said. And beleive me or not but a pack of Winston in Russia is as cheap as about 90 cents, Marlboro should be about 1.20. About 3 dollars for a Captain Black. That's what the prices were 3 months ago when I gave up smoking. :P Snickers bar is 50 to 60 cents. And the dollar prices are approximate cuz the exchange rate changes every now and then and it tends to go up now, meaning the dollar is getting stronger.
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
I don't think they Tax bad healthy, or peoples stupidity, in Russia. Cigarettes in the USA are taxed, and have settlement money added, somewhere gaining on 400%. I remember a story that a pack of cigarettes still only costs like $.70 to produce. But because the tobacco companies have to pay reparations for the dieing, and their own counter advertising (truth people are paid be tobacco) they sell them for like $1.50. The rest is federal and state taxes of one type or another.
Just like in the US they have to pass laws because people are stupid and lazy, like the banning of transfat.
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
True, there are no such big taxes on cigarettes in Russia and advertising of cigarrettes and alcohol drinks is prohibited here by the law. And there is no counteradvertising either except for what they print on packs.
Re: Are you told "correct" news about Russia?
Thanks for the info. Cigarette stocks are getting crushed here as the economy is slow and smoking is declining 3-4% a year, but the theory is markets in Russia and China will remain strong due to cheap prices, making these stocks cheap now.
